Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, with the Bioengineering and Bioscience Unified Graduate Student group (BBUGS), will host its semi annual Fall BIO Vendor Showcase at Georgia Tech. 35+ plus companies will be on hand to display and demonstrate their equipment and research techniques thereby offering a great opportunity for faculty and staff to learn about new products as well. Donated items by vendors will be raffled for attendees throughout the showcase.

That's right, 80 of Grady's most enthusiastic and bright-eyed young scholars are coming Georgia Tech to learn about BME/BioE research from YOU!

We'll need several volunteers to give tours of their lab between 10AM and 12:30PM on May 1st. We'll be organizing two shifts so please indicate in your email response whether you're available to work the first shift (10-11:15AM), the second shift (11:15AM-12:30PM), either, or both (you saint, you). Each shift will involve taking three different groups of 10-ish students through a whirlwind visit of your laboratory setting.

Organized by the Research Committee of the Bioengineering and Bioscience Unified Graduate Students (BBUGS), this workshop is open to any interested Georgia Tech, Emory, Georgia State or Morehouse students.

The symposium training sessions are conducted by Georgia Tech staff and faculty, as well as invited corporate technical representatives with expertise in specific topics of interest.

Sessions are held primarily within rooms in IBB and Whitaker. We have a range of venues available, such as seminar rooms, conference rooms, computer labs and wet labs, which allows for sessions to be taught in lecture as well as workshop demonstration formats. 

Come and equip yourself with the research skills you need, get trained by the experts and attend practical seminars on a wide range of topics!

In his films, Dr. Olson works to communicate critical science issues to ordinary people, a skill that we could all benefit from having. Dr. Olson's background in both science and mass communication give him a unique perspective on the importance of visual communication, spontaneity, and storytelling to the mass communication of science.

This workshop is targeted toward scientists and seeks to improve their storytelling and communication skills to the general public.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Rhyner is responsible for global applications development and marketing for multiple product lines within Beckman Coulter, including Analytical Ultracentrifuges, the Vi-Cell, all Coulter Counters, and several other technologies.  He conducted his graduate studies at the Wallace H. Coulter Department for Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.  There, his work focused on cancer nanotechnology, with a focus on the interaction between biocompatible polymers and nanoparticle imaging agents.

The popular annual event, hosted by the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience and the Bioengineering and Bioscience Unified Graduate Students (BBUGS), is held for high school students to come and engage their interest in science and biotechnology. Students will be able to participate in interesting - and fun! - hands-on demonstrations, take tours of state-of-the-art Georgia Tech laboratories and attend short scientific seminars on a variety of biotechnology topics.  Visitors will even have an opportunity to talk with GT Admissions representatives who will be on hand for the event.

Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience]]> <![CDATA[Heart and Vascular Disease: Translation of Biological Advances to the Clinic]]> 27195 Dr. Quyyumi will be discussing his Amorcyte Myocardial Repair study, a Phase I clinical trial in which CD34+ bone-marrow-derived autologous cells are injected into the heart to treat acute myocardial infarctions. Heart attacks, which affect more than 1 million Americans a year, can cause congenital heart failure, where the heart muscle is damaged and can no longer effectively pump blood to the rest of the body. Endothelial protenitor cells, or EPCs, are cells that have been shown to aid in new blood vessel formation after injury. This study looks into the effect of treating damaged heart tissue with EPCs, with the hopes that these cells facilitate development of new blood vessels that may aid in repair of the heart muscle.

Dr. Sarah Cutler graduated from Dr. Don Stein’s Brain Lab in the BME joint program at Georgia Tech/Emory in 2006.  Currently, Sarah works in US Business Operations in Merial, as a scientific reviewer for promotional and marketing materials, ensuring the scientific accuracy and message clarity for companion animal pharmaceuticals, biologicals and therapeutics.

Seminar]]> 27195 Speaker Bio:  Dr. McKeon founded McKeon Meunier Intellectual Property Law, which specializes in patent prosecution, strategic IP counseling, portfolio management, and technology transfer among others. They serve clients from industries including Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices & MedTech, and Chemistry. Additionally, Dr. McKeon is an adjunct professor at Emory Law School (2005-present) and teaches in the TI:GER® Program, a collaboration between various Georgia Tech colleges and Emory University School of Law focused on technology commercialization.

Dr. McKeon received her PhD at University of Alabama, Birmingham in Anatomy, her JD from Emory University, and her BS at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Physical Therapy.

Jay Gerlach, Technology Solutions Strategic Program

Jay Gerlach is a Commercialization Associate for PATH's Technology Solutions Strategic Program. His work in biotech has focused on gene therapy for cancer, as well as identifying the mechanism of action and eliminating the side effects of validated pharmaceuticals. His work in global health started in Seattle Biomedical Research Institute where he worked on the malaria antigen discovery (MAD) project headed by Patrick Duffy.

PATH is an international nonprofit that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions by advancing health technologies and encouraging healthy behaviors.

Contact Carol Silvers]]> <![CDATA[2010 Techniques Symposium]]> 27195 The Technique Symposium is an annual 3-day scientific training event devoted to providing Georgia Tech bioscience and bioengineering researchers with seminars and hands-on workshops on laboratory techniques, software and analysis as well as scientific communication.

It is organized by the Research Committee of the Bioengineering and Bioscience Unified Graduate Students (BBUGS). BBUGS is the core graduate student group for the biomedical science community at Georgia Tech, and its home is the Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB).
