{"60770":{"#nid":"60770","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Launches Student-Designed iPhone App","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EStudents, faculty and alumni with an iPhone can now find the\nprecise arrival time for a Tech Trolley, reserve a library book and even plan a\nmeal down to a nutritional nugget with a quick swipe of their thumb.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFollowing months of development, Georgia Tech\u2019s\nCommunication and Marketing department is pleased to announce the arrival of\nGeorgia Tech\u2019s official iPhone and iPod Touch application, a tool which aims to\nenhance the campus experience with function and style while providing a showcase\nfor dynamic student research and design.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cGeorgia Tech\u2019s new iPhone app is a communications tool that\nputs many of our everyday resources in the palm of your hand,\u201d said Georgia Tech\nPresident G. P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson.\u0026nbsp; \u201cUsers will be able to do everything from\ngetting personalized healthy dining recommendations to knowing in real time\nwhen the next Tech Trolley will arrive.\u0026nbsp; It was designed by a Tech student\nworking with our Communications and Marketing team, and is a reflection of our\nInstitute\u2019s innovative environment.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe app can be downloaded directly from the iTunes App Store\nor by going to \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/iphone\u0022 title=\u0022www.gatech.edu\/iphone\u0022\u003Ewww.gatech.edu\/iphone\u003C\/a\u003E .\u0026nbsp; Plans are currently underway to develop\na similar app for the Android mobile operating system.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDesigned with function as a primary tenet, the many services\naccessible through the app include:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAn interactive campus map that utilizes Global\nPositioning System (GPS) technology to identify specific campus buildings by\nlocation and visuals.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EA NextBus trolley schedule that pinpoints bus\narrivals to the minute and by location.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDirect access to the campus library catalog that\nallows users to search for and reserve books and determine available computers. \u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECalendar and news feeds from Georgia Tech\u2019s\nnewsroom.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EPhone listings for campus and emergency\nservices.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EUsable Health, a student-designed function that\nallows users to access menus at campus and local dining establishments and plan\nmeals using specific nutritional guidelines.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAn electronic version of the Technique.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EVideos on Georgia Tech\u2019s YouTube channel.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ELinks to directly purchase tickets to athletic\nevents.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe app was envisioned as a venue to exhibit the talented\nwork of students, with the Usable Health utility a testament to this goal. But\nthe app itself was made possible thanks to the talents of one enterprising undergrad. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ENoah Witherspoon, who will be entering his senior year as a computational\nmedia undergraduate at Georgia Tech this fall, worked directly with Communications\nand Marketing to design, develop and refine the application. Employing a\nstudent viewpoint during this process helped ensure the app would offer abilities\nwith appeal and relevance.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI think that as a student I could get a better idea\nof what people wanted out of it,\u201d Witherspoon said. \u201cWorking on the app as a\nstudent here meant I already knew people who I could talk to for ideas. I think\nthat resulted in the app being pretty well rounded. If you\u2019re on Tech\u2019s campus,\nyou\u2019ll find something useful in it.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe app endured a rigorous testing process and was vetted by\na group of students from various campus disciplines before being finalized for\ndownload.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBut the app is far from a tool exclusive to students.\nFaculty, employees, alumni and campus visitors can all utilize the apps myriad capacities,\nwhether it\u2019s listening to WREK radio, adding cash to a Buzzcard account or\nviewing maps to locate the most convenient parking.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAs the app is downloaded onto iPhones and iPod Touches\nacross campus, Communication and Marketing is seeking feedback from users.
