{"609046":{"#nid":"609046","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Constellations Center for Equity in Computing Welcomes First-Ever Program Fellows","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Cstrong\u003EConstellations Center for Equity in Computing (Constellations)\u003C\/strong\u003E recently welcomed the programs first-ever fellows, \u003Cstrong\u003EPK Graff\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003ETerry Foster.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELaunched in late 2017, Constellations has worked to begin accomplishing its goal of democratizing computer science education. The onboarding of Graff and Foster are huge wins in accomplishing this goal.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;So far, we have been laying a lot of groundwork, building relationships and getting our name out there. Now it\u0026rsquo;s time to get into the classroom and help make this a reality. The fellows are crucial to the success of this initiative,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Cstrong\u003EKamau Bobb\u003C\/strong\u003E, Constellations senior director.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBesides democratizing computer science education, Constellations\u0026rsquo; mission is to ensure that all students \u0026ndash; especially students of color, women and others underserved in K-12 and post-secondary institutions \u0026ndash; have access to quality computer science education. CS education is foundational to the Georgia Institute of Technology\u0026rsquo;s academic and research goals in order to provide students with the skills to succeed in the 21st-century workforce. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo kick off bringing this mission to life, the fellows will be working with six Atlanta Public Schools (APS).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBobb added, \u0026ldquo;We\u0026rsquo;re excited that we have the opportunity to start in schools in Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s backyard through the Atlanta Public School System.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBoth Graff and Foster\u0026nbsp;are highly experienced computer science educators and will draw from previous experience, as well as conduct new research, as they begin laying the groundwork for designing a hybrid instruction model.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThroughout their fellowship, Graff and Foster will work on fostering Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s relationship with each of the APS schools and equip them with the knowledge and the tools to better educate their students interested in computing. The end result will be a hybrid model of instructional teaching and online learning for a sequence of computing courses leading to post-secondary computer science and STEM studies.
