{"609837":{"#nid":"609837","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Johnny Smith Receives Purdue University Emerging Voice Alumni Award","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EJohnny Smith, the Julius C. \u0026ldquo;Bud\u0026rdquo; Shaw Assistant Professor in Sports, Society, and Technology in the School of History and Sociology, will be\u0026nbsp;honored\u0026nbsp;as a\u0026nbsp;2018 Emerging Voice Award\u0026nbsp;recipient by\u0026nbsp;the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince 2008 Purdue\u0026#39;s College of Liberal Arts Alumni Board and the Purdue Alumni Association have been honoring young alumni from the College who are successfully achieving their career goals, serving their communities, and representing the College as graduates who think broadly and lead boldly.\u0026nbsp;On September 7, Smith will attend\u0026nbsp;an\u0026nbsp;award ceremony at Purdue and speak\u0026nbsp;on a panel during an undergraduate class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJohnny Smith received his Ph.D. in United States history from Purdue University in 2011. He was hired as an assistant professor of history at Georgia Tech in 2013\u0026nbsp;after a yearlong postdoctoral fellowship in the Sports, Society, and Technology program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn May 2017, he was named the Julius C. \u0026ldquo;Bud\u0026rdquo; Shaw Professor of Sports, Society, and Technology. Smith\u0026rsquo;s research examines the historical intersections between sports, politics, and American culture. He has published three books:\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EThe Sons of Westwood: John Wooden UCLA, and the Dynasty That Changed College Basketball; Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E(written with Randy Roberts); and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EA Season in the Sun: The Rise of Mickey Mantle\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;(written with Roberts).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESmith is the recipient of the North American Society for Sport History Book Prize, and the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EJournal of Sport History\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;Best Article Award; and the Organization of American Historians named him a Distinguished Lecturer in 2017.
