His work focuses on the translation of human behavioral patterns and perceptions within real and virtual environments into computer models and simulations to better understand design decisions. He often develops custom hardware sensors, interactive systems, and software applications for capturing occupant behavior, testing human spatial perception in 3D virtual environments, running discrete-event and agent-based modeling and simulation, and performing spatial analysis in the intersections between Building Information Modeling and Geographic Information Systems. Mr. Swarts works in the Interactive Media Architecture Group in Education (IMAGINE Lab) in the Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) developing collaborative virtual and augmented environments alongside models of landscape perception and predictive models of building performance based on social interaction probabilities. He works in the SimTigrate Design Lab developing sensor technologies for tracking human behavior in healthcare environments to produce simulation models for optimization of the patient experience. In the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA), Mr. Swarts leads several software development projects around custom user interfaces designed using universal design principles. He assists in running the Interactive Product Design Lab (IPDL) where Industrial Design and Human Computer Interaction students come to create functional interactive electronic prototypes. Additionally he teaches courses on computer programming for designers in the School of Architecture, and he teaches courses on designing for interaction and interactive environments in the School of Industrial Design. Mr. Swarts is a co-founder of Paracision LLC, which develops workshops and custom software solutions for design firms around parametric modeling and decision making. His research focuses on full-scale prototyping as a mode of testing architectural ideas on aesthetics, materiality, performance, efficiency and process. Russell Gentry","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ERussell Gentry is an Associate Professor of Architecture with a courtesy appointment in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He teaches courses in building structures and materials, fabrication technologies, and design and construction process. He is the faculty mentor for the 2013 class of the Georgia Tech Presidential Scholars.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHis current research focuses on the representation of fabrication logics and processes within BIM environments. His current projects, funded by the Department\u0026nbsp;of Energy, include the design of innovative PV systems and the design of modular components for nuclear reactors. Dr. Gentry is also the project lead\u0026nbsp;for the Building Information Modeling for Masonry or BIM-M Initiative at Georgia Tech. Dr. Economou\u0027s teaching and research is in the areas of shape grammars, computational design, computer-aided design and design theory, with over forty published papers in these areas. Recent funded projects include the project Courtsweb: A Visual Database of Federal Courthouses, GSA\/US.Courts, $1.3M. Design projects from his studios at Georgia Tech have received prestigious awards in international and national architectural competitions. He is the Director of the Shape Computation Lab at Georgia Tech and the Director of the Art and Architecture in Greece and Italy Study Abroad Program at Georgia Tech. He has been invited to give talks, seminars, and workshops at several universities including MIT, Harvard, TU Vienna, U. Michigan, UCLA, among others. He is internationally recognized in promoting professional use of building simulation and has served on the board of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA). In the nineties he coordinated four major EU-funded consortia of academic and industrial partners in the fields of design tool interoperability (COMBINE, 1990-1995), energy performance simulation, outsourcing and project planning (e-HUBS, 2002-2005).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAugenbroe has been main advisor of 30+ PhD graduates in Europe and the USA. He teaches graduate courses and conducts research in the fields of building performance concepts, computational building simulation, indoor air quality, intelligent building systems, uncertainty and risk, system monitoring and diagnostics. \u0026nbsp;He serves on the scientific board of five international journals and has published over 200 refereed papers and three books.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAugenbroe has obtained major research grants in Europe and the US. His work focuses on economic decision analysis of resilient and sustainable infrastructure systems. This field is multidisciplinary and lies at the confluence of construction engineering and project management, infrastructure asset management, and quantitative and computational finance. His work has significant implications for improving long-range planning and integrated decision-making processes for buildings and civil infrastructure assets, advancing economic\/financial valuation methods for investments in major capital projects while preserving environmental and social conditions to foster resilient and sustainable development.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAshuri\u0027s most significant research and scholarly accomplishments are one book, one book chapter, 20 journal articles, seven research reports, 44 refereed conference proceedings, 23 invited research presentations, and ten poster presentations. He has been principal investigator of 14 external research projects, total worth of $1,981,606, sponsored by several public and private organizations, such as National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), Construction Industry Institute (CII), Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and American Utility Management (AUM). He has been principal investigator of 12 internal research projects, total worth of $133,641, sponsored by several Georgia Tech units, such as Digital Building Lab (DBL), Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Georgia Tech Foundation (GTF), and Georgia Intern Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAshuri is the recipient of several research awards for his scholarly accomplishments. He was recently selected to Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southeast\u2019s \u201cTop 20 Under 40\u201d list for 2014. His research project \u201cRecommended Guide for Next Generation of Transportation Design Build Procurement and Contracting in the State of Georgia\u201d received 2013 High Value Research \u201cSweet Sixteen\u201d Award from the Value of Research Task Force of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). \u201cA Real Options Model to Evaluate Toll Highway Project under Two-Phase Development Plan\u201d published in the Built Environment Project and Asset Management Journal was the 2012 Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence. \u201cAn Investment Analysis Framework for Energy Retrofit in Existing Buildings\u201d received the Best Paper Award from the 47\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E Annual International Conference of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC).
