Get to Know the New Nurse Manager - Ina Collins

Where did you attend school? Hampton University

Why did you decide to pursue a career in nursing? I wanted to work in healthcare because I enjoy helping others. Growing up in a household with two Pharmacists; I knew I wanted to stay in healthcare but I wanted to do something slightly different. I am that person that jumps out of the car to help when I see an accident.

Have you always worked with college-age students?

I started at a teaching hospital and was the flu clinic nurse at Johns Hopkins University for students and staff. Most of my career I worked in a hospital, where we treated all ages.

What do you love most about your job?

I love reviewing a system that is in place and finding a new approach to improve workflow. It is not always popular initially, especially for those who do not like change; but I love the final outcome when it works and everyone finds the change beneficial.

Can you give me a brief overview of what it is you will be doing in your new position as nurse manager?

A few of my duties will include hiring new staff and ensuring job performance and customer satisfaction is maintained. To work with other departments on campus to provide health services that are accessible for the student body ie: flu clinics. I also meet with staff for training, to implement new policies, review quality measures, etc. Daily, tasks include managing supplies, processing payroll and assisting patients in the clinic.

How do you feel your past positions have prepared you for this role?

I am utilizing many skills that I have learned in the hospital and in previous management roles in this new position.

What motivated you to enter into medicine?

My desire to want to help others.

What do you like to do when you are not at SHS?

I really enjoy reading and spending time with my family. I have one little David Beckham and a little Lebron James, so I enjoy watching them play.
