A major voice in\nthe field of contemporary science fiction, Goonan\u2019s presence reinforces\nGeorgia Tech\u2019s growing strength as a hub for cutting-edge\nscience-fiction research.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am delighted to accept the School of Literature, Communication,\nand Culture\u0027s unique opportunity to join students in exploring the\nleading edge of emergent technologies as seen through the lenses of\nliterature, public policy, engineering, science, and media,\u0022 said\nGoonan. \u0022Georgia Tech\u0027s confluence of emergent technologies,\ninternational presence, and gifted students will shape some of the\nworld\u0027s most informed and influential scientists, engineers,\npolicy-makers, and interpreters of our increasingly global culture in\nthe decades to come, and I am honored to be a part of the Ivan Allen\nCollege\u0027s prescient initiative in this mission.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 1994 the New York Times designated her first novel, Queen City\nJazz, a Notable Book of the Year. Since then, Goonan\u2019s stories have\nbeen nominated for eminent science fiction prizes including the Nebula,\nBritish Science Fiction, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards. In 2008 her most\nrecent book, In War Times, won both the John W. Campbell and American\nLiterary Association Awards for best science fiction novel of the year,\nbeating out stiff competition including William Gibson\u2019s Spook Country\nand Michael Chabon\u2019s The Yiddish Policeman\u2019s Union.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ECritics and scholars outside the science fiction community regularly\nrecognize Goonan\u2019s ability to extrapolate startling\u2014and startlingly\npoetic\u2014new futures from current science and technologies as well. In\n2001, Scientific American praised her as a \u201cshaman of the small\u201d for\nher expertise in nanotechnology, and that same year she was invited to\nspeak at the Library of Congress about \u201cthe biological century and the\nfuture of science fiction.\u201d In 2004, Goonan delivered keynote speeches\non nanotechnology and literary vision at the University of South\nCarolina, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Idaho Academy of\nSciences. In 2006 her essay, \u201cConsciousness, Literature, and Science\nFiction,\u201d appeared on the Iowa Review web site, and in 2007 she was\ninvited to join the Sigma Science Fiction Think Tank, which does\nfuturism consulting for the U.S. Government and appropriate NGOs.
