Here\u0026rsquo;s what you need to know:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince its inception in 2008, ResearchGate has been widely used by scholars in the research community. Currently, there are over\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/about\u0022\u003E14 million\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;registered members and more than 100 million publications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis social networking platform has caused significant copyright concerns, especially among publishers and the research library community. In October 2017, Elsevier and the American Chemical Society\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/95\/i40\/Publishers-take-legal-action-against.html\u0022\u003Efiled a law suit\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;against ResearchGate for massive copyright infringements. While the parties are negotiating, ResearchGate updated its\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/terms-of-service\u0022\u003ETerms of Service\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;a week after the filing and its\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/application.IntellectualPropertyPolicy.html\u0022\u003EIntellectual Property Policy\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in January of this year.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new Terms of Service are much more detailed than the previous version, limiting ResearchGate\u0026rsquo;s liabilities. Specifically, ResearchGate emphasizes that their service consists of information uploaded by users. ResearchGate does not \u0026ldquo;preview or review or filter such information,\u0026rdquo; therefore claiming that they have no idea of possible infringements and are not liable for content that violates others\u0026rsquo; rights. Reading together with the added clauses like Liability, Indemnity, Venue, and Arbitration, apparently ResearchGate is improving their protection shields.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIf you currently use ResearchGate or other social networking platforms to share your research and scholarship, this is a good reminder of author rights and responsible sharing. Generally, the publishing agreement you signed specifies what rights you retain as an author and what you can share.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, IEEE allows authors to choose their\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org\/choose-a-publishing-agreement\/\u0022\u003Epublishing options\u003C\/a\u003E, including copyright being assigned to IEEE or being held by authors through a Creative Commons Attribution License.
