School of Public Policy Hosts 2018 NASPAA Conference

From October 10 - 13, the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Public Policy hosted Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) 2018, the premier annual conference of deans, directors, and faculty from public policy and affairs graduate programs around the world.

"Co-hosting NASPAA in Atlanta this year allowed the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy greater visibility in conference sessions, where our faculty were presenters and session leaders," said School of Public Policy Chair Kaye Husbands Fealing.

Held in downtown Atlanta, this year's conference featured keynotes, workshops, and panels with 350 speakers from over 160 schools, including 23 international schools.

School of Public Policy faculty, staff, and students played an instrumental role at the conference through logistical support, participation in speaker and panel sessions, and introducing visiting faculty to Atlanta.

Some notable highlights included Husbands Fealing's introduction of Raphael Bostic, the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, who provided the keynote lecture for the conference. NASPAA recently appointed Husbands Fealing to their Executive Council following her years of activity in the organization, particularly on their Data Council, and Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee.

Husbands Fealing also led visiting faculty on a tour of Tech Square, which included a talk with Kendeda Living Building Director Shan Arora and Skanska USA Project Manager Jimmy Mitchell. The pair gave an overview of how the Kendeda Building will be constructed, how environmental policy and sustainability will be implemented onsite, and how research and education will be combined in the building and surrounding sites.

In addition, tour attendees were treated to a history of the development of Tech Square from Ngozi Chuku, a consultant at Georgia Tech, and Carl Rust, who serves as associate vice president for international initiatives at Tech. School of Public Policy faculty also arranged for Stan Vangilder from the Energy Innovation Center to help lead a tour of the BeltLine with faculty from Georgia State University.

The School of Public Policy is a unit of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
