{"613206":{"#nid":"613206","#data":{"type":"event","title":"GVU Center Brown Bag: Tony Fast, \u0022Project Jupyter and the Rise of Literate Computing\u0022","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProject Jupyter is a growing ecosystem of free, open source scientific software for literate and interactive computing. \u0026nbsp;Jupyter\u0026#39;s Notebook, and related experiences, are becoming standard interfaces for scientists and engineers in physical and social sciences. \u0026nbsp;The notebook interface is impacting the broader landscapes of research, computing, and teaching where communicating data and code are essential; the stakeholders span industry, academia, and philanthropy. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis talk will review the history of Project Jupyter as scientific software born from the Scientific Python (SciPy) community. \u0026nbsp;Since its inception, the community has extended Jupyter to work with over 50 different languages and provided new options for interactive development, research and presentation, including JupyterLab, the next generation of the Notebook. \u0026nbsp;In the broader open source community we find Jupyter tools for grading, batch processing, app development, documentation, tests, and even source code.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENotebook interfaces compose literate documents that provide the ability to share human and machine readable knowledge within organizations across diverse disciplines. \u0026nbsp;This\u0026nbsp;talk will highlight recent case studies in Jupyter transforming classroom education, massive collaboration in physics, data-driven journalism, and the entire multimedia experience of learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESpeaker Bio:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETony Fast is a modern scientist with over a decade of experience analyzing unstructured data for cross functional teams in research, business, and security. \u0026nbsp;Currently, he works as an open source consultant assisting organizations in connecting their technology to the scientific Python community. \u0026nbsp;He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Drexel University and has B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Rutgers University. \u0026nbsp;Tony\u0026rsquo;s research explores the intersection of applied engineering and computer science, trying to understand how open access and interactive computing will transform basic science for the next generation workforce.
