Through an analysis of the feature film Pacific Rim (2009) and the Netflix production Altered Carbon (2018), it will argue that new Hollywood productions often feature the disappearance of Western characters into Japanese mecha suits and bodies. These narratives suggest both a continuation of postwar Orientalist tropes and new discourses on race and ethnicity in American science fiction.
