P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson\nhas announced the appointment of Archie Ervin as Georgia Tech\u2019s inaugural vice\npresident for Institute Diversity. He will start January 1, 2011.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EErvin, who has served as the associate provost for diversity\nand multicultural affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\nsince 2005, will be charged with oversight of all diversity-related matters at\nGeorgia Tech, providing leadership to formulate goals and strategies in support\nof the Institute\u2019s strategic plan. The position reports directly to the\npresident and sits on the president\u0027s cabinet.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cDr. Ervin has dedicated his professional career to the\nadvancement of diverse and inclusive communities,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cHe is a\nwelcome addition to Georgia Tech as we unify and focus our own diversity\nprograms. I am looking forward to working with him to achieve the goals\noutlined in our strategic vision.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn a public address on campus last month, Ervin outlined the\nresponsibilities for the job: to provide dedicated leadership to the diversity\nmission and functions of the university; to elevate the visibility and\nestablish the credibility of those functions; and to ensure the diversity goals\nand priorities of the institution are at every level of governance within the\nuniversity structure. To be effective, he recommends the approach of a servant\nleader.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cCoordinate does not mean control,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are\ncapable people at every institution who have the talent, expertise and\ncommitment to make valuable contributions to the diversity enterprise. My role\nwill be to enhance the abilities of those around us because they are the ones\nwho make things happen.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECreating a culture of inclusiveness, he added, is a\ncontinuous process that must be embedded in the fabric of the institution. It\nis, in his mind, a strategic choice.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIf you want to be an excellent institution, then you must\nhave the talent of the world at your doorstep,\u201d he said. \u201cOur challenge is to create\na community of scholars and learners who feel valued, respected and welcomed.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESearch committee chair and Dean of Libraries Catherine\nMurray-Rust said, \u201cThis is an important position for Georgia Tech at a crucial\ntime. My colleagues on the search committee and I are very excited to have\nfound someone with the experience and enthusiasm of Dr. Ervin. He has a breadth\nand depth of understanding of diversity in all its forms and experience working\nwith faculty, staff and students.
