{"61509":{"#nid":"61509","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Matriculation of Black Students","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThis week, Georgia Tech celebrates the 50th anniversary of\nthe matriculation of black students at the Institute.\u0026nbsp; Ralph Long Jr., Lawrence Williams and Ford Green, the first\nthree black students enrolled in 1961, will return to campus on October 8 and 9\nto celebrate the anniversary.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to Gary May, chair of Georgia Tech\u2019s School of\nElectrical and Computer Engineering and chair of the 50\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E\nAnniversary Planning Committee, \u201cMatriculation of black students at Georgia Tech\ntook place during a time in the Deep South where desegregation was frequently\nmet with extreme strife. Tech is relatively unique in that the enrollment of\nLong, Williams and Greene took place without violence or a court\norder.\u0022\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the coming year, Georgia Tech will celebrate the\ncontributions that African-American students, faculty, staff and alumni have\nmade to the Institute. The three\noriginal students who enrolled in 1961 will return to campus to participate in\nthe anniversary and Homecoming activities.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis anniversary is an\nopportunity to remember our past and the challenges our early black students\nexperienced while at the same time enjoying our successes and looking toward a\nfuture that truly celebrates Tech\u2019s leadership and future opportunities to increase\nand enhance the diversity of our community.\u201d said Georgia Tech President G.P. \u201cBud\n\u201cPeterson.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EProgramming for the year, which is still being finalized, will\ninclude an exhibit at the Alumni Association, guest speakers throughout the\nyear, a presence in annual campus leadership programs for students, a series of\nevents for the MLK Weekend, a theatrical production and other lectures and\nsymposia. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe\nupcoming year will offer a wide variety of events and speakers. We hope the\nentire Georgia Tech community will join in the celebration,\u201d said May.
