However, digital news and magazine sites remain largely similar to their printed predecessors\u0026rsquo; formatting despite the freedoms offered by digital media.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis is why a team of passionate designers, programmers, and researchers are teaming up to create a new kind of project called the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/parametric.press\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to its mission statement, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Eis an experimental digital magazine dedicated to showcasing the expository power that is possible when the audio, visual, and interactive capabilities of dynamic media are effectively combined.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(CSE) Ph.D. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fredhohman.com\/\u0022\u003EFred Hohman\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eis part of a small group of scientists who are leading this magazine\u0026rsquo;s creation.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHohman, whose research applies a human-centered approach to designing and developing interactive interfaces and data visualizations, joins the lead for this project,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EMatthew Conlen\u003C\/strong\u003E, a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington whose research on dynamic publishing tools power the magazine. Other pioneering collaborators include\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAndrew Sass\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eand\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESara Stalla\u003C\/strong\u003E, and they are joined by expert editors across disciplines such as data visualization, technical publishing, and computational biology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;These articles are often data-driven, interactive stories. So there is a notion of play that let\u0026rsquo;s you interact with the content, allowing you to learn and retain difficult-to-understand concepts,\u0026rdquo; said Hohman.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECurrently, there are three other media companies creating similar content that involves audio, visual, and interactive abilities:\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EExplorable Explanations, FiveThirtyEight,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Eand\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ENew York Times\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe difference between these larger outlets and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Eis the structure and formatting of how content is submitted.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Eoffers qualified people of all backgrounds to submit content or story ideas, whether they have a technical background or not, and get compensated up to $1,000 for their submissions. The diverse and skilled team of\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Ethen reviews each submission for quality content and helps deliver the final result by providing designing, coding, or writing expertise and time as necessary.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We are looking for people to submit their great ideas, but we are here to help make these articles come to life. If you don\u0026rsquo;t know how to create a visual, auditory, or linguistic component to enhance the story, we have a full team to assist. We don\u0026rsquo;t want programming to be a barrier to create these one-of-a-kind stories,\u0026rdquo; said Hohman.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EParametric Press\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Eofficially launched Dec. 3, 2018, with a call for submissions for its first issue,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EScience + Society\u003C\/em\u003E.
