{"616076":{"#nid":"616076","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIt\u0026rsquo;s not too early for your Georgia Tech student to be thinking about plans for summer!\u0026nbsp; Opportunities are available for undergraduate students to spend part of the summer working side-by-side with researchers at universities in the U.S. and abroad.\u0026nbsp;Students are able to gain valuable experience in full-time research with a cohort of students from universities across the country \u0026mdash; participating in exciting projects while also experiencing the research culture at another university.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUndergraduate research helps students learn how to investigate challenging questions and solve open-ended problems that most likely have not been solved before. Such experiences strengthen a student\u0026rsquo;s resume and can lead to promising new career paths and interests.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOpportunities are available in programs for all majors.\u0026nbsp;The National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsors programs from Alabama to Washington. Other research programs are sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Mayo Clinic, and the Department of Defense. In addition, the NSF and other international organizations and universities offer research programs abroad.\u0026nbsp;Most domestic programs provide the participating student with a stipend, housing allowance, and some travel assistance.\u0026nbsp; Many programs also sponsor professional development seminars and workshops as well as social events and outings. Often, these summer research programs are identified as internships, so be sure to include them in your search.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYou can also find summer research opportunities on the Georgia Tech campus. One is the SURE program, founded in 1992, which is aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented students in STEM fields. The 10-week program is open to approximately 30 to 40 juniors or seniors in the Colleges of Computing, Engineering, and Sciences.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother great research opportunity is the President\u0026rsquo;s Undergraduate Research Awards.\u0026nbsp; The deadline for summer applications is March 1, 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Undergraduate Research Ambassadors are hosting a Research for Undergraduate Experience Information Session on Thursday, January 24, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Clough Lounge, located in Clough Commons, Suite 205.
