{"617967":{"#nid":"617967","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Collegiate Cup 2019: A Hackathon with Equity in Mind","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EBefore Super Bowl LIII came to town there was another championship happening just a few miles down the road from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom Jan. 25-27, students from eight colleges and universities gathered for the first-ever \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.thecollegiatecup.com\/\u0022\u003ECollegiate Cup\u003C\/a\u003E hackathon in the state of Georgia. The hackathon was the first statewide competition that focused exclusively on improving the quality of life for Georgia residents.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.bookthegarage.com\/\u0022\u003Ethe Garage at Tech Square\u003C\/a\u003E, the hackathon attracted teams from Georgia Tech, Clayton State University, Georgia State University, University of Georgia, Agnes Scott College, Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University, Middle Georgia State University, and the University of North Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn all, 16 teams competed in three categories \u0026ndash; coding, design, and case study \u0026ndash; for the honor of taking home the state championship or people\u0026rsquo;s choice prizes. State championship teams each received $750 and people\u0026rsquo;s choice winning teams each took home $250.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETwo teams from Georgia Tech were named state champions in the design and case study categories respectively. The MGA Knights from Middle Georgia State University were named the state champs in the coding competition.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech teams won all three people\u0026rsquo;s choice awards.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/constellations.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EConstellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E served as a challenge partner for the three-day event. In this role, Constellations collaborated with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ung.edu\/center-entrepreneurship-innovation\/\u0022\u003ENorth Georgia Innovation Center (NGIC),\u003C\/a\u003E \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.sandboxatl.com\/\u0022\u003ESandboxATL\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hack.gt\/\u0022\u003EHackGT\u003C\/a\u003E to formulate the three challenges, each of which had an emphasis on improving equity in computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I was blown away with the quality of work and enthusiasm from the students all weekend long. All of them brought their A game and it was exciting to see so many students working together to make others\u0026rsquo; lives better,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Cstrong\u003EPK Graff\u003C\/strong\u003E, Constellations Fellow.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn each category, teams were asked to generate actionable ideas that would build on Georgia\u0026rsquo;s strengths to improve the quality of life for all Georgians. Deliverables were further defined by asking teams to focus on increasing access to computer science education for all communities across the state.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECompetitors in the coding and design categories were given a set of specific challenges to address within their category, before choosing one challenge to focus on and develop a solution for. Meanwhile, the case study competitors were given an organizational challenge to address.
