{"618299":{"#nid":"618299","#data":{"type":"news","title":"DramaTech Theatre Uses Augmented Reality in \u0022The Safety Show\u0022","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThis weekend, Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s DramaTech Theatre will be performing \u003Cem\u003EThe Safety Show\u003C\/em\u003E, a performance that blends virtual and augmented reality with theater.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe show is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Arts and TSRB\u0026rsquo;s Augmented Environments Lab. Students were given cards with the prompt, \u0026ldquo;I feel safe when___,\u0026rdquo; which served as a springboard. The actors began developing the show without a script, relying solely on the responses they received from the prompts. Over the course of about a month, they devised the stories and personal narratives that are included in the show.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe concept is rooted in 2016\u0026rsquo;s \u0026lsquo;I Feel Safe When\u0026rsquo; campaign, which sought to increase the number of people and perspectives in campus conversations about safety by reaching out to students, faculty, and staff with the question, \u0026ldquo;I feel safe when ___.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAugmented and virtual reality were implemented into the show when Josh Fisher,\u0026nbsp;a digital media Ph.D. student in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and Melissa Foulger, the artistic director of \u003Cem\u003EThe Safety Show\u003C\/em\u003E, connected.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Our vision was to include technology because it is a place where we hide to feel safe, or it becomes a place where we are not safe at all. As we move through the performance, the idea was to start extremely integrated in technology but to have it lessen as you dig further into the stories of safety \u0026mdash; because the reality is that we usually need connection and community to feel safe,\u0026rdquo; Foulger said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThe Safety Show\u003C\/em\u003E is improvisational, which means audience participation will be involved. Because of the technological nature of the show, audiences are limited to about 20-30 for each performance.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The AR used in the performance is slightly different than what has been done before,\u0026rdquo; said Fisher. \u0026ldquo;It is a shared augmented reality experience where every member of the audience sees the same media at the same time. Other performances have used AR, but what each audience member saw through their phones was unique to them.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith its first performance in 1947, DramaTech Theatre is the oldest continually running theater in Atlanta.
