Mario Bianchini, a doctoral candidate in the Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of History and Sociology (HSOC), has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research in Germany on his dissertation entitled “Modeling a Technological Future: Culture and Technological Imagination in East Germany, 1945-1990.”

He will be affiliated with Germany’s leading research center on East Germany, the Potsdam Center for Contemporary Research. Bianchini is the recipient of numerous other awards including a DAAD Fellowship in 2017-18 when he launched research for his dissertation, and a Linda Hall Fellowship in 2019-20.

“Mario is a gifted student. Not only is he fluent in German, but he is a fluid writer who has a talent for engaging the reader with his historical imagination while refocusing our view of the history of technology in East Germany by adding a strong cultural dimension,” says HSOC Professor Kristie Macrakis.

In addition to many presentations at conferences about his work, Bianchini’s modified masters paper research “Soldiers of Theory: German Economists and the Cold War” will be published in the journal German Studies Review, 2020.

Fulbright is the world’s largest and most diverse international educational exchange program. Fulbright alumni include 59 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 72 MacArthur Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and non-profit sectors. Since its inception in 1946, more than 390,000 “Fulbrighters” have participated in the Program
