Each month a member of the Georgia Tech community will share his\/her favorite element via video.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/scmb.gatech.edu\/people\u0022\u003EKimberly Short\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;is a physicist. She earned her B.S. degree in the University of Arizona and M.S. degree in the University of California, Los Angeles. She is finishing her Ph.D. under the supervision of School of Physics Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/kurt-wiesenfeld\u0022\u003EKurt Wiesenfeld\u003C\/a\u003E and expects to defend her dissertation in\u0026nbsp;summer 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;Mendeleev\u0026#39;s periodic table is a triumph of human pattern recognition,\u0026quot; Short says. \u0026quot;He had the foresight to leave holes in his periodic table for theretofore undiscovered elements. Using patterns in the elements in his table, he was able to make predictions of the properties, such as chemical behaviors and masses, of these undiscovered elements\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShort was formerly the assistant director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/scmb.gatech.edu\/about-us\u0022\u003ESoutheast Center for Mathematics and Biology\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(SCMB). SCMB is\u0026nbsp;one of four\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505392\u0022\u003ENSF-Simons Research Centers for Mathematics of Complex Biological Systems (MathBioSys)\u003C\/a\u003E.
