Their efforts finally completed the seventh row of the famous\u0026mdash;if poorly understood\u0026mdash;periodic table of the chemical elements.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow all 118 elements have names, even though most spontaneously decay more quickly than you can say \u0026ldquo;Oganesson\u0026rdquo; or \u0026ldquo;Livermorium.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhat now?\u0026nbsp; Continue?\u0026nbsp; Try to start another row?\u0026nbsp; Why?\u0026nbsp; To what end, and at what cost?\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis talk will explore the economic, societal, and scientific benefits and drawbacks inherent in this pursuit.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout the Speaker\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/honorsprogram.gatech.edu\/staff\u0022\u003EMonica Halka\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;is an experimental physicist whose research focused on the interaction of light with atoms.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe has coauthored a set of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/periodic-table-of-the-elements-monica-halka\/1028749846\u0022\u003Esix volumes on the periodic table\u003C\/a\u003E, which examines historical, astrophysical, and practical observations about each of the chemical elements.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe serves as associate director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/honorsprogram.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EHonors Program at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E, where she teaches courses in optics, energy science, and the nuclear age, among others.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout Frontiers in Science Lectures\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nLectures in this series are intended to inform, engage, and inspire students, faculty, staff, and the public on developments, breakthroughs, and topics of general interest in the sciences and mathematics.
