Constellations Participates in 2019 NSF STEM Showcase to Spread Awareness about Computer Science Education in Atlanta

A video by the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing will be featured in the 2019 STEM for All Video Showcase, a free online event. It is funded by the National Science Foundation and will be held online May 13-20.

The presentation, entitled “Lighting a Pathway for Equity in Computer Science” allows viewers to meet several Constellations students, teachers, and staff members and hear about their experiences with Constellations and how access to computer science education has affected their lives. The video also details what problems the center is working to solve and how these issues impact the Atlanta community.

“Constellations is thrilled to have a video featured in the STEM Showcase this year,” said Lien Diaz, Constellations director of educational innovation and leadership.

“In the past, the showcase has gathered over 81,000 views from 186 different countries, and to have the chance to spread the Constellations story around the world is very exciting. We are looking forward to learning more about the work of other STEM organizations and gathering feedback about our own program.”

Now in its fifth year, the annual showcase will feature over 240 innovative projects aimed at improving STEM learning and teaching, which have been funded by the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies. During the week-long event, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and members of the public are invited to view the short videos, discuss them with the presenters online, and vote for their favorites. Voting occurs on the showcase platform and on Twitter and Facebook through likes and shares.

The theme for this year’s event is “Innovations in STEM Education.” Video presentations address improving K-12 STEM classroom, informal environments, undergraduate and graduate education, teacher professional development, and community engagement. Collectively the presentations cover a broad range of topics including science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, cyberlearning, citizen science, maker spaces, broadening participation, research experiences, mentoring, professional development, NGSS, and the Common Core.

The STEM for All Video Showcase is created and hosted by TERC, a non-profit, research, and development organization, located in Cambridge. MA. TERC partners with six NSF funded resource centers MSPnet, CADRE, CAISE, CIRCL, STELAR, and CS for All Teachers. The showcase is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (#1642187).
