One focus of her talk will be the life and writing of Shulamith Firestone, who published\u0026nbsp;the bestselling feminist manifesto\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EThe Dialectic of Sex\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp;1970 and who\u0026nbsp;was later\u0026nbsp;diagnosed with schizophrenia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis event is open to WST Learning Community students and guests. Donaldson is professor of English at NYIT, where she teaches courses in bioethics and American literature and directs the minor in Medical Humanities. She has published essays on LSD-inspired disability-immersion experiences of schizophrenia; mental illness in film; antipsychiatry in Lauren Slater\u0026rsquo;s memoirs; and physiognomy and madness in\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EJane Eyre\u003C\/em\u003E. She chaired the Modern Language Association\u0026rsquo;s Committee on Disability Issues in the Profession, and she is a Fellow in The Future of Disability Studies group at Columbia University\u0026rsquo;s Center for the Study of Social Difference. She is a member of the editorial board of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EJournal of Literary \u0026amp; Cultural Disabilities Studies\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;and co-editor (with Catherine J. Prendergast) of the special issue, \u0026ldquo;Emotion and Disability\u0026rdquo; (2011). She co-edited the essay collection\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EThe Madwoman and the Blindman:\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;Jane Eyre\u003Cem\u003E, Discourse, Disability\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;(Ohio State University Press, 2012) and currently co-edits the Palgrave Macmillan book series\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ELiterary Disability Studies\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;with David Bolt and Julia Miele Rodas.
