{"62558":{"#nid":"62558","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Competition Names \u2018Hungriest Hackers\u2019 at Georgia Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EOrganizers of the Hungry, Hungry Hackers (H3) competition at\nGeorgia Tech selected three winners out of more than 20 participants in the\ninaugural cyber security contest.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EHosted by the Georgia Tech Information Security Center\n(GTISC), the Georgia Tech Association for Computing Machinery (GT ACM) and Georgia\nTech Research Institute\u2019s (GTRI) Cyber Technology Group, H3 provided a safe and\nfun atmosphere for both security researchers to hone their skills and for students\nto try their hand at hacking routines. \u201cA systematic vulnerability assessment\nis an important way to discover weaknesses that must be addressed to increase\nthe robustness of systems against such attacks,\u201d said GTISC Director Mustaque\nAhamad.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Computer Science Graduate Research Assistant\nShauvik Choudhary took home the top prize, $750 in cash. Computer Engineering\nundergraduate student Ben Blount and Computer Science Graduate Research\nAssistant Yeong Jin Jang won $150 and $100, respectively. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld Oct. 23 in the GTRI Conference Center from 10 a.m. to midnight, the competition was\nset up in two phases. \u201cWe had 23 total participants,\u201d said Human Computer\nInteraction master\u2019s student Toni Walden and H3 volunteer. \u201cWe set it up as a\ncapture the flag-style competition. Participants were given a range of IP\naddresses to attack, with varied \u2018flag\u2019 categories, like unpatched versions of\noperating systems, port knocking, stenography, protocol analysis and Web apps,\namong others.\u201d\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EInitially, contestants were to be cut after Phase One, with\nthe remainder going on to Phase Two. The competition didn\u2019t play out that way,\nhowever.
