The award places him in the company of such giants of American poetry as \u003Cstrong\u003ERobert Frost\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EGwendolyn Brooks\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003ETracy K. Smith\u003C\/strong\u003E who are past recipients of the fellowship.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEstablished in 1936 and given in memory of \u003Cstrong\u003EJames Ingram Merrill\u003C\/strong\u003E, with generous support from the \u003Cstrong\u003ET. S. Eliot Foundation\u003C\/strong\u003E, the prize recognizes distinguished poetic achievement and carries with it a stipend of $25,000 and a residency at the Eliot summer home in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Fellows are nominated and elected by a majority vote of the \u003Cstrong\u003EAcademy\u0026rsquo;s Board of Chancellors\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn announcing the award to Kaminsky, \u003Cstrong\u003EAcademy Chancellor Kwame Dawes\u003C\/strong\u003E said, \u0026ldquo;Ilya Kaminsky is among a few poets that one has to admire for his impact on the wider poetry world through the force of his art, despite his relatively modest publishing output as a poet. Consequently, he is quite easily and rightfully recognized as a vital voice in global poetry and one of the most brilliant poets working today.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;His is a poetics for our moment, as much engaged in understanding the world of Eastern Europe as it is in understanding America today. And yet in his work one suspects a reach that extends beyond our moment\u0026mdash;a reach for something urgent and essential\u0026mdash;a sense of social justice and a compelling proposition that speaking out against tyranny and abuse perpetuated by governments remains a timeless and necessary imperative of art. The quest for beauty in language is, therefore, an act of resistance and even protest in the face of the ugliness of human oppression. Ilya Kaminsky remains a tremendous broker for the poetic arts in our world today.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKaminsky is the author of multiple collections of poetry, including \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cem\u003EDeaf Republic\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E (Graywolf Press, 2019). His work has been recognized in the past by a \u003Cstrong\u003ELannan Literary Fellowship\u003C\/strong\u003E, a \u003Cstrong\u003EWhiting Award\u003C\/strong\u003E, the \u003Cstrong\u003ERuth Lily Poetry Fellowship\u003C\/strong\u003E, and a \u003Cstrong\u003E2019 Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur heartiest congratulations to Dr. Kaminsky for this distinction, which also brings credit to the Georgia Institute of Technology Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and its School of Literature, Media, and Communication which houses the Poetry@Tech program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poetry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EPoetry@Tech\u003C\/a\u003E kicks off its 2019\/2020 poetry reading series on October 3.
