Georgia Tech Climbs to Top 5 Among Public Universities in U.S. News Rankings, Engineering Programs Remain Among Nation’s Best

Georgia Institute of Technology continues to rank among the top public universities in the nation, and 10 of its engineering programs are among the best in the country, according to the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, which also listed the Institute as one of the most innovative.

In the newest report released September 9, Georgia Tech climbed three spots to No. 5, along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the best public university category. Among national universities — public and private — Georgia Tech moved up six spots to No. 29. Tech shares that spot with New York University, Tufts University, UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Rochester.

All of Tech’s engineering programs remained in the top five for schools offering the discipline, with the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering holding the top spot in that field again this year. Tech’s undergraduate programs in aerospace, and materials and civil engineering were all ranked No. 2 in their respective fields. The Institute remains ranked No. 4 for best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.

“We are very proud of the rankings Georgia Tech has earned in all areas,” said Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera. “I am particularly pleased that we have been recognized among the very best public universities in the nation, a testament to our commitment to providing lifetime educational opportunities, serving as an engine of innovation and economic growth, and helping find solutions to the most pressing challenges in the world.”

The Georgia Tech School of Public Policy, housed in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, is ranked as one of the nation's best graduate programs. Read this article for a breakdown of the School's overall ranking as well as the rankings of its specializations. U.S. News & World Report announces graduate school rankings every spring.

Georgia Tech’s rankings also moved up for Best Colleges for Veterans, going from No. 15 to No. 10. Among the nation’s Most Innovative universities, Georgia Tech remained at No. 4. The Scheller College of Business slipped one notch to No. 22 in the Best Undergraduate Business Programs rankings. The College holds that spot along with seven other schools, including the University of Georgia. Scheller had two business specialty programs ranked in the top five, including management information systems at No. 3 and quantitative analysis/methods at No. 4.

In other categories highlighting academic strength, Georgia Tech ranked No. 5 for Co-op/Internship programs, No. 8 for Undergraduate Research/Creative projects, No. 12 for Senior Capstone projects, and No. 20 for Learning Communities.
