Borowitz’s Research Featured in President Cabrera's Institute Address

President Ángel Cabrera delivered his first institute address to a group of Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff at the Ferst Center for the Arts on September 5. In his speech, Cabrera discussed many topics including creating a new strategic plan, organization changes, student mental health, improving student diversity, and research. Featured in the research slide of President Cabrera's presentation was Mariel Borowitz.

The image used was taken from an article featuring Borowitz, a Sam Nunn School of International Affairs assistant professor, for her research on open government data. In the article "Will Moving to the Commercial Cloud Leave Some Data Users Behind?," Borowitz discussed the opportunities and challenges of moving government data to a commercial cloud system.

President Cabrera said during his address, "our research is leading to breakthroughs in areas ranging from artificial intelligence to sustainability, from biomedical engineering to policy, and a wide range of social and cultural issues. With research awards now surpassing one billion dollars, the magnitude of our research enterprise is simply extraordinary, especially for a public institution without a medical school."

Borowitz joined the Nunn School in 2013 after completing her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland College Park in Public Policy. Her research focuses on international space policy issues, primarily international cooperation in Earth observing satellites, and satellite data sharing policies. From September 2016 through September 2018, Borowitz was policy analyst for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.
