{"626874":{"#nid":"626874","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Helps Build a Stronger and More Diverse Computing Future through Tapia 2019","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s College of Computing participates annually in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tapiaconference.org\/\u0022\u003EACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing\u003C\/a\u003E, and this year was no exception.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith 34 undergraduate and master\u0026rsquo;s students, and five \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.omscs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Eonline master\u0026rsquo;s in computer science (OMSCS)\u003C\/a\u003E students attending, the Yellow Jackets took San Diego by storm.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe conference brought together more than 1,800 faculty, students, industry professionals, and researchers from all backgrounds and ethnicities to discuss and celebrate diversity in computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;As a Latina woman, I am very excited to be here and get to know other Latinas who are interested in computing. It\u0026rsquo;s fun getting to share my passion for diversity with new friends and recruiters,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Cstrong\u003EValentina Brambila Grando\u003C\/strong\u003E, a second-year computer science major.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld September 18-21, the conference focused conversations around its theme, \u0026ldquo;Diversity: Building A Stronger Future.\u0026rdquo; Session topics included supporting students with disabilities, broadening participation in computing, and addressing bias and unfairness in artificial intelligence (AI). The three-day conference also gave attendees the opportunity to network and interview at prestigious companies like Google, Cisco, and JP Morgan.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECharity \u0026ldquo;Alistair\u0026rdquo; Tarver,\u003C\/strong\u003E who is the first student to graduate from the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/constellations.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EConstellations Center for Equity in Computing\u003C\/a\u003E high school program and attend Georgia Tech, was also in attendance.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;ve never really gotten to travel before, so it\u0026rsquo;s cool to come to a new city and hear from people I would have never otherwise had the chance to hear from. It\u0026rsquo;s been interesting to get different perspectives and find common ground with other students from around the world,\u0026rdquo; said Tarver.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch4\u003EA Leader in Diversity\u003C\/h4\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech leadership, alumni, and current students were involved throughout the conference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDean of Computing and John P. Imlay Jr. Chair\u003Cstrong\u003E Charles Isbell \u003C\/strong\u003Ehelped kick off the conference as a guest for the opening fireside chat where he discussed the evolving methods of disseminating misinformation through deep learning and embedding ethics within the computing curriculum from the start. Isbell also discussed the importance of diversifying doctoral programs during a panel discussion held later in the week.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOther highlights included:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EUniversity of Washing Richard E. Ladner professor and Georgia Tech alumna, \u003Cstrong\u003EJennifer Mankoff\u003C\/strong\u003E (Ph.D. CS 2001) gave one of the opening plenaries and shared her experience as a researcher and academic while also living with a disability and chronic illness. Her advice to students: \u0026ldquo;Just follow your passion.\u0026rdquo; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAyanna Howard\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ic.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E (IC) chair, co-hosted a caf\u0026eacute;-style panel where she facilitated meaningful discussion about the\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cra.org\/cra-wp\/\u0022\u003E Computing Research Association Widening Participation (CRA-WP).\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELara Martin\u003C\/strong\u003E, a HCC Ph.D. candidate advised by School of IC Associate Professor Mark Riedl, took home the top prize for best presentation at the doctoral consortium.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother big part of the College\u0026rsquo;s participation at Tapia is hosting a booth. As a platinum sponsor of the conference, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Computing\u003C\/a\u003E hosted a booth with information on the college\u0026rsquo;s programs for prospective graduate students.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We love coming to Tapia every year because we want to recruit a diverse group of students for our programs.
