As the world celebrates\u0026nbsp;the 150th anniversary of the periodic table, chemical elements have never been so central to the global imagination. Just look at recent blockbuster films revolving around vibranium and infinity stones.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBut did chemical\u0026nbsp;elements really ever go out of style?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EModerated by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/library.gatech.edu\/charlie-bennett\u0022\u003ECharlie Bennett\u003C\/a\u003E, this panel discussion brings two\u0026nbsp;scientists and\u0026nbsp;two science fiction writers together to explore how science and art have long influenced each\u0026nbsp;other while shaping public understanding\u0026nbsp;of the periodic table and chemical elements and their\u0026nbsp;role in our everyday lives.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech scientists\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/deirdre-shoemaker\u0022\u003EDeirdre Shoemaker\u003C\/a\u003E and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/finn\/m.g.\u0022\u003EM.G. Finn\u003C\/a\u003E will have a conversation with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Milton-John-Davis\/e\/B005HVQMOK\u0022\u003EMilton J. Davis\u003C\/a\u003E, science fiction writer and chemist, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/38db520b-2342-5ea8-a3e0-57b340e6d49a\u0022\u003EAmanda Weiss\u003C\/a\u003E, an up-and-coming science fiction author who teaches Japanese at Georgia Tech. Through their conversation, we hope to get\u0026nbsp;a closer look at how new \u0026mdash;\u0026nbsp;and sometimes very old! \u0026mdash; ideas about how the world works circulate through science, fiction, and culture at large.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch4\u003EAbout the Discussants\u003C\/h4\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/library.gatech.edu\/charlie-bennett\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECharlie Bennett\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;is the public engagement librarian and economics specialist at Georgia Tech. He holds a Master\u0026rsquo;s in Library and Information Science\u0026nbsp;from Valdosta State University, and a B.S. in Economics and in Science, Technology, and Culture from Georgia Tech. He\u0026nbsp;is the author of 17\u0026nbsp;novels and\u0026nbsp;editor or\u0026nbsp;co-editor of seven anthologies. He owns\u0026nbsp;MVmedia, LLC , a small publishing company specializing in science fiction, fantasy, and \u0026quot;Sword and Soul.\u0026quot; Davies is also the technical director of Hill Manufacturing, a company specializing in maintenance chemicals and products. As a research chemist,\u0026nbsp;he has developed polymers for the textile, janitorial, and computer industries. In 2004, he received a U.S. patent for a cleaning solvent\u0026nbsp;and dispenser pen designed to remove conformal coatings and adhesives from circuit boards and other electrical equipment.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/faculty\/Finn\/\u0022\u003EM.G. Finn\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;is a professor and chair of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences, and the\u0026nbsp;James A. Carlos Family Chair for Pediatric Technology. In his research, his laboratory develops new vaccines, ways to find and kill cancer cells, new materials for drug delivery and membrane-based separations, and ways to evolve molecules with desired functions. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EACS Combinatorial Science\u003C\/em\u003E. His science fiction inspirations are decidedly old-school, ranging from Ray Bradbury to Ursula K. Le Guin to Dan Simmons.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/deirdre-shoemaker\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDeirdre Shoemaker\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;is the\u0026nbsp;Dunn Family Professor of Physics in Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s School of Physics. She is the director of the Georgia Tech Center for Relativistic Astrophysics and associate director of the Institute for Data Engineering and Sciences. Black holes, spacetime wrinkles and gravitational waves \u0026mdash; understanding these and other aspects of gravity drives Shoemaker\u0026rsquo;s research. She is a member of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Council and the NASA LISA Study Team. She is also a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which detected gravitational waves for the first time on September 14 2015, ushering in the era of gravitational wave astronomy.
