{"628535":{"#nid":"628535","#data":{"type":"news","title":"SPP faculty and National Academy of Engineering ethics workshop","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.onlineethics.org\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EOnline Ethics Center\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;at the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently hosted a two-day workshop that was designed to introduce STEM faculty to strategies for introducing ethics into the classroom and other educational settings.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;The workshop entitled \u0026quot;Working Ethics into the Conversation: Introducing STEM Faculty to Teaching Ethics\u0026quot; took place on October 22 and 23 in Washington DC and was supported by funding from the National Science Foundation.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;Approximately 30 participants, largely from engineering fields, attended the event.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;The speakers primarily focused on responsible conduct of research (RCR) and engineering ethics while discussing different teaching strategies.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Jason Borenstein, from the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy and Office of Graduate Studies, was a co-organizer of the event, and he also served as a speaker.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;His session, co-presented with Dr. Joseph Herkert from North Carolina State University, was entitled\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;Ethics Pedagogy: Using Case Studies in the Classroom.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;Dr. Borenstein and Dr. Herkert outlined considerations to take into account when selecting a case study, such as the benefits and drawbacks of using a real versus a hypothetical case.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;They also asked participants to break into small groups to examine\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.onlineethics.org\/Resources\/three-scenarios-with-self-driving-vehicles.aspx\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 title=\u0022https:\/\/www.onlineethics.org\/Resources\/three-scenarios-with-self-driving-vehicles.aspx\u0022\u003Ea case study about self-driving cars\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in order to illustrate how to manage class discussion.Other speakers at the workshop focused on topics such as codes of ethics, ethics autobiography, active learning strategies, ethical theory, and ethics assessment.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Online Ethics Center is a repository of ethics materials for STEM fields.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;It is housed with the NAE\u0026rsquo;s Center for Engineering Ethics and Society.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":"","field_summary_sentence":[{"value":"The School of Public Policy faculty Jason Borenstein was part of the National Academy of Engineering ethics workshop as a organizer and presenter."}],"uid":"34406","created_gmt":"2019-11-04 14:16:41","changed_gmt":"2019-11-04 14:50:43","author":"xyuan40","boilerplate_text":"","field_publication":"","field_article_url":"","dateline":{"date":"2019-11-04T00:00:00-05:00","iso_date":"2019-11-04T00:00:00-05:00","tz":"America\/New_York"},"extras":[],"hg_media":{"591252":{"id":"591252","type":"image","title":"Jason Borenstien","body":null,"created":"1493755751","gmt_created":"2017-05-02 20:09:11","changed":"1493755751","gmt_changed":"2017-05-02 20:09:11","alt":"Jason Borenstein, Director Georgia Tech Center for Ethics and Technology","file":{"fid":"225292","name":"download.jpg","image_path":"\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/download_3.jpg","image_full_path":"http:\/\/www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu\/\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/download_3.jpg","mime":"image\/jpeg","size":9195,"path_740":"http:\/\/www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/740xx_scale\/public\/images\/download_3.jpg?itok=GHn1gdx0"}}},"media_ids":["591252"],"groups":[{"id":"1289","name":"School of Public Policy"}],"categories":[],"keywords":[{"id":"182963","name":"Online Ethics Center.
