{"628579":{"#nid":"628579","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Joins USG\u2019s STEM IV Initiative ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech is a new participant in the University System of Georgia (USG) STEM IV initiative, which was launched on October 29-30, in Athens, Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The USG initiative addresses some key issues in promoting student success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - or STEM; both for students who major in STEM fields and others who take STEM courses as a part of their non-STEM degree curriculum,\u0026rdquo; says \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/leadership\u0022\u003EDavid Collard\u003C\/a\u003E, the College of\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nSciences\u0026rsquo; associate dean for academic programs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith STEM IV, the USG STEM initiative now includes all 26 system institutions for the very first time, said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rozbarnesfowler\/\u0022\u003ERosalind Barnes Fowler\u003C\/a\u003E, USG\u0026rsquo;s director of public awareness and outreach. STEM IV is deeply connected to two other system-wide initiatives \u0026ndash; the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.usg.edu\/academic_affairs_and_policy\/complete_college_georgia\/momentum_year\u0022\u003EMomentum Year\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/completega.org\/\u0022\u003EComplete College Georgia\u003C\/a\u003E \u0026ndash; said USG Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.usg.edu\/news\/release\/tristan_denley_named_new_chief_academic_officer_of_the_university_system_of\u0022\u003ETristan Denley\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech will receive grant support from the USG STEM IV program to enhance the access of undergraduates to research opportunities in the College of Sciences, especially for first-year and sophomore students.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Participation in undergraduate research provides exceptional opportunities for students to gain experience with experiment design, research skills, data analysis, and different modes of communication,\u0026rdquo; said College of Sciences Assistant Dean \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/leadership\u0022\u003ECam Tyson\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026ldquo;It is the best way for students to begin to build their professional identities as scientists.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;In addition to providing research stipends,\u0026rdquo; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/explorellc.cos.gatech.edu\/staff\u0022\u003EEmma Blandford\u003C\/a\u003E said, \u0026ldquo;the USG grant will provide some additional support to the College of Sciences EXPLORE Living Learning Community, allowing us to increase our opportunities to connect first-year students with Georgia Tech researchers and the local scientific community.\u0026rdquo; Blandford is the assistant director of the EXPLORE program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe EXPLORE program exposes students to research opportunities in Georgia Tech through a special section of the GT 1000 first-year seminar class. In addition, Blandford teaches a separate \u0026ldquo;Introduction to Research\u0026rdquo; course with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/leadership\u0022\u003EJennifer Leavey\u003C\/a\u003E. Leavey, who is the faculty director of EXPLORE LLC, said the course \u0026ldquo;provides students with the skills and confidence to approach faculty so that they are successful in attaining a research position and transitioning into the research setting.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe College of Sciences team will partner with the other USG institutions that are working to enhance their undergraduate research programs as part of the STEM IV initiative.
