It\u0026rsquo;s a nice office, but she has another unofficial one, and it\u0026rsquo;s a bit farther away.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHow far? Try the Atlantic Ocean, where Lozier, a renowned\u0026nbsp;physical oceanographer, is set to return in 2020 as the lead investigator on a major international research program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELozier\u0026#39;s research into how climate change is impacting the oceans of the world and\u0026nbsp; phenomena like the Gulf Stream is the focus of ScienceMatters\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/science-matters\/sciencematters-season-3-episode-10-physics-ocean\u0022\u003ESeason 3, Episode 10, \u0026quot;The Physics of the Ocean.\u0026quot;\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThat title also describes what physical oceanographers study, Lozier says. This particular type of oceanography \u0026quot;can run anywhere from people studying about waves at the shoreline all the way to what I do, which is study the very, very large-scale ocean circulations,\u0026quot; she says. \u0026quot;So I\u0026#39;m interested in currents that move from Antarctica up to the northern North Atlantic, or what we would say is the global ocean circulation,\u0026quot; also known as the \u0026quot;global ocean conveyor belt.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELozier describes some of the history behind phyical oceanography, a well as\u0026nbsp;her busy forthcoming schedule: In addition to her planned ocean reserach in 2020, Lozier will take over as president of the American Geophysical Union in 2021. She also wants to continue a mentorship program she\u0026#39;s established with the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach ScienceMatters episode includes a quiz that refers to facts mentioned in each podcast.
