{"62969":{"#nid":"62969","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Expands French Campus With New Institute","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETo culminate the 20th\u0026nbsp;anniversary of its presence in France, the Georgia Institute of Technology is expanding its campus in the northeast region of the country with a new resource center for industry and\nacademic research laboratories. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Lafayette Institute will be built at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in Metz, which is at the forefront of global engineering education and research.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAt 2 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the Bill Moore Student Success Center, Georgia Tech leaders and a delegation of French officials will sign the agreement creating the Lafayette Institute. The event is part of the \u201cFrance-Atlanta 2010: Together Towards Innovation\u201d series running now through Dec. 12 at Georgia Tech and around the city.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cBy providing our industrial partners and academic research laboratories access to state-of-the-art facilities, we will be creating an environment where solutions to global challenges, ranging from energy to medical technology, can be developed,\u201d said Georgia Tech President G.P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson. \u201cThis Institute also\nunderscores Georgia Tech\u2019s commitment to expand our global partnerships.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFrench authorities will finance 23 million euros, roughly $31 million in American money, to create the Lafayette Institute. The institute will provide access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities for optoelectronics, technology transfer and commercialization services. It will focus on technologies at the intersection of materials, optics, photonics, electronics and nanotechnology.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis European innovation hub will strengthen Georgia\u2019s global footprint in technological innovation and serve as a link between research laboratories and industry, where technological solutions and\nprototypes can be developed rapidly to stimulate economic development,\u201d said Yves Berthelot, president of Georgia Tech-Lorraine.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EEstablished in 1990, Georgia Tech-Lorraine offers global research and internship opportunities, and year-round undergraduate, master\u2019s and doctoral programs. More than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students have attended Georgia Tech-Lorraine.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech has celebrated the 20th\u0026nbsp;anniversary of Georgia Tech-Lorraine in\nMetz, France and Atlanta throughout 2010. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETo conclude the commemoration, Georgia Tech is hosting nine of the 20 events in \u201cFrance-Atlanta\n2010: Together Towards Innovation,\u201d a series of events focused on French and U.S. collaborations in four major areas: science, business, culture and\nhumanitarianism.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cFrance-Atlanta: 2010 Together Towards Innovation\u201d is co-sponsored by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech events include scientific symposiums such as \u201cTranslational Treatment for\nCardiovascular Disease,\u201d \u201cPhotonics, Materials, Nanotechnology, Applied Robotics\u201d and \u201cHaiti 2010;\u201d business workshops such as \u201cBridging the Atlantic: Leveraging Workforce and Intellectual Capital for International Business Success,\u201d \u201cInvesting in France \u2013 Focus on Lorraine\u201d and\n\u201cCommercializing Medical Devices.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETech will also host cultural events such as \u201cSonic Generator Presents Music of IRCAM with Guest Composer Philippe Leroux\u201d and \u201cParis-Atlanta: Grand Plans, Everyday Life,\u201d as well as a humanitarian program on \u201cBringing Awareness to Haiti Relief\nAid.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFaculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend the events, which are free and open to\nthe public.
