France-Atlanta Celebrates its 10th Year

The 10th annual France-Atlanta series, ran from August 28 through November 15, 2019, with a series of scientific, cultural, humanitarian, and business events. By all accounts, the events were a great success.

The Consulate General of France and the Georgia Institute of Technology have teamed up to present the France-Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia since 2010. The annual event series focuses on innovation and collaboration between France and the United States.

This year’s lineup included a 2-day workshop that provided an opportunity for all of the CNRS joint International Research Laboratories (IRL) of North America to meet and network as they worked to tackle the challenges of climate change and sustainable development within the framework of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Members of the CNRS, the North American IRLs and GT-CNRS UMI 2958, founded in Metz, France in 2006, were also on hand to witness the dedication of the UMI-Atlanta office and the signing of an agreement between the CNRS and the Institut Lafayette, an innovation platform focused on optoelectronics.

Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community attended the events, including a number of cultural events held on Georgia Tech’s campus. The School of Modern Languages hosted a round table discussion on campus featuring art critic and curator Oulimata Gueye talking about her project, “Non-Aligned Utopias.” Gueye’s work focuses on new technologies in Africa at the intersection of science, art, and culture. The school of Music hosted a musical performance by Loïc Guénin, who also spent time working with a student jazz ensemble before their performance of one of his pieces. They also collaborated with École Polytechnique on an experimental Water Drums performance and workshop to futher demonstrate the connection between art and science.

France-Atlanta 2019 showcased the connections between France and Atlanta through many facets of research and innovation, voices, and talents. The annual series continues to foster collaboration between students, researchers, businesspeople, and professionals in their fields of study, and strengthens French-American partnerships.
