{"631126":{"#nid":"631126","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Turning Scholarships into Job Opportunities","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAlahna Smith discovered she wanted to be an engineer at the age of eight.\u0026nbsp;For five years, her mom enrolled her in a National Society of Black Engineers summer program for young students in Washington D.C.\u0026nbsp; From there, Smith continued pursuing her interests at an engineering magnet school, where she found her introduction into the field.\u0026nbsp;Now she\u0026rsquo;s a second-year\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ece.gatech.edu\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer\u0022\u003Eelectrical engineering\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;student at Georgia Tech\u0026nbsp;and a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/coe.gatech.edu\/clark-scholars\u0022\u003EClark Scholar\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;taking advantage of internship opportunities just outside D.C.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EA Memorable Internship \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELast summer, Smith received an opportunity to intern at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ivysys.com\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EIvySys Technologies\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;where they coordinated a project specifically for her centered around creating metrics to detect disinformation campaigns on social media. During her internship, Smith also learned how to use data extraction tools to analyze trends in social media data. She was tasked with using \u0026lsquo;R software\u0026rsquo; to organize and analyze such data to create labeled metadata that would serve as thresholds for disinformation detection.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Before my internship, I was unaware of the impact disinformation campaigns have on our society,\u0026rdquo; said Smith. \u0026ldquo;I love how my time at\u0026nbsp;IvySys\u0026nbsp;not only enriched my engineering experience and knowledge but also made me more aware of influencers, so I\u0026rsquo;m now less susceptible to them.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EChoosing Tech\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn high school, Smith\u0026rsquo;s top choice was Georgia Tech because of its national ranking, location and diversity. So, when she received the call from the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.clarkfoundationdc.org\/approach\/engineering\/clark-scholars\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer\u0022\u003EA. James Clark Scholars Program\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;the day before admissions\u0026#39; decision day, her choice was even more clear. The Clark Scholars Program is dedicated to financially supporting students who exhibit strong academic and leadership potential, creating engineers of the future. Smith was a part of the introductory 2018 cohort of the Georgia Tech Clark Scholars Program, and she is paving the way for many students like her.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When you come to a school like Tech where you feel like everyone is so smart, I came in feeling a little bit scared, and now, I am starting to notice myself letting that go,\u0026rdquo; said Smith. \u0026ldquo;My Clark peers helped me so much.
