The eventual goal is to release the extended toolkit for use by academic and community researchers free of charge.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When completed, this tool will provide not just researchers, but communities themselves, with innovative methods for preserving and exploring history,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/wcprogram.lmc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/bradley-rittenhouse\u0022\u003EBrad Rittenhouse\u003C\/a\u003E, project director and coordinator of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/dilac.iac.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EDigital Integrative Liberal Arts Center\u003C\/a\u003E (DILAC) in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech tool has been under development since 2016, with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/allenarchive.iac.gatech.edu\/elasticsearch\u0022\u003Epapers of former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr.\u003C\/a\u003E serving as a test case. The late \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/about\/overview\/legacy\u0022\u003EAllen\u003C\/a\u003E, a 1933 graduate of Georgia Tech, served as mayor of Atlanta from 1962 to 1970 \u0026mdash; an era of dramatic social and economic change for the city. The \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EIvan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u003C\/a\u003E is named for Allen, who provided pivotal testimony in Congress for what became the Civil Rights Act of 1964.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003EArchive Tool \u0026lsquo;Could Benefit Knowledge-Seekers Far Beyond Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe archive tool is based on \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/omeka.org\/\u0022\u003EOmeka\u003C\/a\u003E, an open source content management system designed to display and interact with digital collections online. It allows users to map connections among the 30,000 pages in the collection, particularly among named entities such as people, organizations, and places. It gives people a low-cost, easy-to-use tool to analyze a wide range of archival materials that are capable of being digitized, such as texts, images, audio, and video, in a variety of ways, said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/todd-michney\u0022\u003ETodd Michney\u003C\/a\u003E, assistant professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of History and Sociology\u003C\/a\u003E and principal investigator on the grant.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;What we are developing could benefit knowledge-seekers far beyond Georgia Tech as a general way to organize digitized archival content, or indeed any digital content in ways that promote instant access and encourage interpretation,\u0026rdquo; said Michney, who \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/news-events\/stories\/2019\/10\/michney-receives-2019-ghrac-award-excellence-educational-use-historical-records\/628141\u0022\u003Erecently won\u003C\/a\u003E a Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council Award for Excellence for his work on the project. \u0026ldquo;Developing these tools on a widely-used, existing open-source platform should help to make them immediately relevant and readily adopted.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Whereas traditional archival research has been the preserve of specially-trained academics, our cutting-edge technology will enable ordinary citizens to find the information suiting their particular needs and interests, and to infer relationships in data by leveraging the power of an algorithm that automatically tags and categorizes content,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003EVIP Team Launched for Archive Project\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWendy Hagenmaier, digital collections archivist for the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/library.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Library\u003C\/a\u003E and project advisor on the Ivan Allen Archive Project, said the tool holds promise for libraries, as well.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am excited to serve as advisor on this initiative that will expand access to novel ways of navigating and analyzing archival collections using open source tools. Insights from the project will enrich the Library\u0026#39;s efforts to curate collections and create open pathways to knowledge,\u0026rdquo; \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/library.gatech.edu\/wendy-hagenmaier\u0022\u003EHagenmaier\u003C\/a\u003E said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDILAC has provided support and meeting space for the work, and the tool\u0026rsquo;s interface was developed by a Computer Science Junior Design Capstone team during the 2017-2018 academic year. This year, Michney, Rittenhouse, and Hagenmaier launched a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.vip.gatech.edu\/teams\/community-digital-archives-project\u0022\u003EVIP team\u003C\/a\u003E to work on the project.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDevelopment work under the grant is expected to continue through July 2021, when the researchers hope to have completed refinement of the language processing component and the tool\u0026rsquo;s ability to handle multimedia content. They plan to distribute the resulting package through Omeka and the software development and distribution site GitHub. They are also planning a presentation at this year\u0026rsquo;s Atlanta Studies Symposium and at the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations conference in
