Nunn will be honored at the Ivan Allen College\u2019s Founder\u2019s Day\nluncheon on March 15, an\nevent that coincides with Allen\u2019s birthday. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u201cWhile some individuals talk about achieving world peace, Sam Nunn has actively\npursued this vision and created a legacy that continues to reap results long\nafter his exit from public office,\u201d said Peterson. \u201cThe\nIvan Allen Prize for Social Courage stands as the preeminent award offered by\nGeorgia Tech and underscores the mission we have in Georgia, the nation and the\nworld.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring his\n24-year tenure as a United States Senator from Georgia, Nunn served as chairman\nof the Senate Armed Services Committee. In this capacity, he was the guiding\nforce in reshaping American policy toward the former Soviet\n Union in the wake of the break-up of the Soviet Empire. The\nNunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, which provides assistance to Russia\nand the former Soviet republics for securing and destroying their excess\nnuclear, biological and chemical weapons, has been hailed as \u201cthe most\nsignificant congressional achievement in nuclear affairs since the dawn of the\nnuclear age.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/release.html?nid=59809\u0022\u003EAnnounced earlier\nthis year\u003C\/a\u003E, the new Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social\nCourage was established to recognize individuals like Nunn, who, by\nstanding up for clear moral principles in the social arena, have positively\naffected public discourse at the risk of their own careers, livelihoods and\neven their lives. The Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social\nCourage will be accompanied by a $100,000 award to be funded by the income from\na $2 million commitment made in 2008 by the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family\nFoundation.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u201cSam Nunn embodies the moral and ethical principles of\nAtlanta\u2019s former mayor and it is certainly fitting that he will be the first\nrecipient of this distinguished award,\u201d said Jacqueline Jones Royster, dean of Georgia Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EIvan Allen College of\nLiberal Arts\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAlthough Nunn\nretired from the U.S. Senate in 1996, he has continued to provide leadership\nagainst the dangers of terrorism and nuclear weapons. Together with fellow\nGeorgian and CNN founder Ted Turner, he established the Nuclear Threat\nInitiative (NTI), a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that focuses on\nreducing global threats from weapons of mass destruction. Next year, NTI will be celebrating its 10th anniversary,\nhaving made significant achievements with a lasting legacy to make the world a\nsafer place.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENTI\ntriggered significant\nU.S. and global funding for securing loose nuclear bomb-making material through its bold\ninitiative to remove vulnerable materials from Yugoslavia. The organization also\nconceived of and helped create the first international organization focused on\nnuclear security, the World Institute for Nuclear Security. Most recently, NTI,\nthrough the generosity of Warren Buffett, supported the development of an\ninternational nuclear fuel\u0026nbsp;bank, which gives countries an alternative to producing their own nuclear fuel\nand avoiding the introduction of technology that can be used either for\npeaceful reactors or for creating bombs.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn an effort\nto galvanize global support for and action on the vision of a world free of\nnuclear weapons and the urgent steps needed to reach that goal, Nunn joined former\nSecretary of State George P. Shultz, former Defense Secretary William J. Perry and\nformer Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger. Their \u003Cem\u003EWall Street Journal\u003C\/em\u003E op-ed in 2007 reframed the terms of the global\ndebate on nuclear issues. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENunn serves as\nchairman of the board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington,\nD.C.
