Title:
360-degree Video Standard and Streaming Technologies for Mobile Virtual Reality

Abstract:
These days 360-degree video processing technologies for virtual reality (VR) service are emerging. ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG are developing video standards for 360-degree video processing and file format together such as MPEG-I (Immersive media) and JVET Future Video Coding (FVC). Thus, this presentation introduces 360-degree video standard work and streaming technologies for mobile VR. It consists of three topics: (1) a new HEVC Tile allocation method considering the computational ability of asymmetric multicores as well as the computational complexity of each Tile. (2) 360-degree video standard work including the novel streaming technology that uses Motion-Constrained Tile Set (MCTS). The user viewpoint-based video tile streaming reduces bandwidth as well as the response time of user movement remarkably. (3) 360-degree video streaming over mmWave communication. The topic introduces the streaming strategies using raw video and entropy-coded raw video.

Bio:
Eun-Seok Ryu is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Gachon University, Seongnam, Korea. Prior to joining the University in 2015, he was a Principal Engineer at Samsung Electronics, Suwon, Korea, where he led a multimedia team as a director. He was a Staff Engineer at InterDigital Labs, San Diego, California, USA, from Jan. 2011 to Feb. 2014, where he researched and contributed to next-generation video coding standards such as HEVC and SHVC. From Sep. 2008 to Dec. 2010, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at GCATT (Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology) in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia USA. In 2008, he was a Research Professor at the research institute for information and communication technology at Korea University, Seoul, Korea. His research interests are in the area of multimedia communications that includes video source coding and wireless mobile systems. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in computer science from Korea University in 1999, 2001, and 2008, respectively. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Communications Society.

Seminar Title: Mixing Business with Engineering

Abstract:
How could I proceed from an innovation idea to actually making money? What’s involved in the process of taking a design concept to a final product anyway? Who are my customers, how do I find them, how do I figure out if there are enough of them, what they like, and if they would buy my product? What if there are competitors with similar ideas as mine? How do I protect my intellectual property?

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Mikko Hakkarainen is originally from Finland (curiously though, he never worked at Nokia!) and he found his way to the American shores via UWCA, a prestigious international high school in Wales, UK, and concentrated on Electrical Engineering at MIT, receiving his S.B., S.M., and PhD degrees from the Institute. At work, his main goal is to help customers find superior and affordable lighting control solutions that work without problems. Away from work, he is active in student education and outreach through MIT’s Educational Council, the Florida Engineering Society, and other local school based organizations.

Mikko joined Lutron Electronics in 2009 after over two decades of high performance analog and digital IC design and management, and is now enjoying the challenge of helping create the world’s highest quality lighting control products. He is currently responsible for growing Lutron’s satellite engineering offices and their product development teams, with a focus on ensuring that they become seamlessly integrated into the parent company. He specializes in driving for top engineering quality and efficiency and in bringing together engineering teams with product planning, procurement, marketing and sales organizations.

Mikko has a broad experience base that includes engineering design, quality assurance, and manufacture of electronic products, both at the component and final product levels. His knowledge areas cover lighting controls and automation, solid-state lighting, digital cameras, flat panel displays, cellular base stations, battery chargers and gauges, and medical diagnostic equipment. He has designed commercially available IC products for all these areas and has built application platforms as well as end products in many of these sectors.

Intellectual property is the backbone of the world economy. It plays a role in everyone’s life. It is particularly important for engineers, whether you are in research and development, an entrepreneur, a business manager, or any other technology career. We will discuss the various types of intellectual property (patents, trade secrets, copyrights, and trademarks) including what they protect and how they are acquired.             

Speaker Bio:
Laura Huffman is a proud graduate of Georgia Tech, holding the BEE and MSEE degrees.  She began her career at Bell Laboratories in research and development in optical fiber and cable. She subsequently moved into business management for Lucent Technologies and OFS, with global responsibility for product management, product marketing, business development, intellectual property strategy and public policy. After that career, she obtained her JD degree from Emory University, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Emory International Law Review, and participated in the joint Georgia Tech Emory TI:GER program. She is currently a senior associate at King & Spalding in the Intellectual Property practice group.

Seminar Title: Follow your passion, to find and build a fulfilling career

Abstract:
Arlo will share his experiences and advice for building a fulfilling career starting with his first real job up to his current position where he is a group Technologist leading an advanced development team within the High Speed Signal Conditioning business unit at Texas Instruments in Atlanta. His career path has included many roles in-between, such as being a Test Engineer, Analog Mixed Signal Designer, Design Manager and helping to build a new product line from zero to a hundred million dollar per year business at TI. Arlo will tell his story, giving some insight to where his passion for being an electrical engineer came from, and sharing some of the lessons that he has learned the hard way, with the hopes that these shared experiences will benefit students who are embarking on the next step of their career.

Speaker Bio:
Arlo Aude is currently Technologist for the High Speed Signal Conditioning (HSSC) group, which is part of the High Speed Data and Clocks business unit in the Analog Signal Chain division of Texas Instruments. From 2007 to 2014, Arlo served as the Analog Design Manager for HSSC, which was founded in part by the work of his design team. Prior to that, Arlo spent eight years as the sole analog design engineer for the Atlanta Design Center in Norcross, designing High Speed ADCs, Ethernet Analog Front Ends and Digital Video Retimers, honing his skills as an Analog Designer.

Arlo earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) along with minors in Industrial and Social Psychology in 1995 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is an Eagle Scout, and an alumnus of Psi Upsilon Fraternity.

Arlo’s career started in 1996 at Harris Semiconductor in Melbourne, FL. His first position, just out of school, was in the Data Converter group, as a Test Engineer, soon moving in to Analog Design. In 1999, he moved to National Semiconductor in Atlanta, to take a position as an analog circuit designer. National was later acquired by TI in 2011. In 2015, Arlo was elected to the TI Technical Ladder at the level of Senior Member of Technical Staff. He is the inventor or co-inventor of over 35 patents in many disciplines and author of over 12 journal and industry papers.

Outside of work, Arlo is a busy parent, hiking and backpacking with his wife and toddler age son.

Speaker Bio: Christopher R. Valenta received the BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and BS in Optical Engineering (OE) from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the MSECE and PhD in ECE from the Georgia Institute of Technology. At Rose-Hulman, he worked with the Missouri University of Science & Technology as a researcher in their electromagnetic compatibility laboratory where he worked to increase signal integrity in motor controller systems. At Georgia Tech, he joined ‘The Propagation Group’ where he commercialized the first 5.8 GHz backscatter sensor system for use in high-voltage environments, developed numerous RFID-enabled sensors, and pioneered work in microwave-energy harvesting using power-optimized waveforms. In 2009, he was awarded an ATLANTIS Fellowship and participated in an 18-month research program with the Politecnico di Torino and the Technical University of Munich. Christopher has also spent time as a visiting scholar in the Sampei Laboratory at the University of Osaka. He is currently a branch head at the Georgia Tech Research Institute Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory and instructor for courses in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professional Education. His research interests include microwave-energy harvesting; backscatter radio communication; RFID; ultra-low power, passive sensors; lidar systems; electro-optical receivers, lidar signal processing, and software defined radio. He is a consultant to industry and a frequent reviewer of journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Valenta is also the winner of the 2015 IEEE Microwave Magazine Best Paper Award and a registered professional engineer in the state of Georgia.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Wilkinson has been involved in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years, working with technologies and solutions ranging from fiber to the premises to long haul transport, Carrier Ethernet to MPLS, and traditional to modern SDN/NFV-enabled networks. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and author in trade publications.

In his current role as Senior Portfolio Marketing Manager for ECI Telecom, Scott operates as a bridge between the development and sales organizations, helping to evangelize ECI's industry-leading suite of optical transport and packet switching solutions.

Scott spent eight years as the Vice President for Product Management and System Engineering for Hitachi’s North American telecommunications division. Prior to Hitachi,
Scott worked for both startup companies and large telecommunications equipment
providers in Silicon Valley and the telecom corridors of New Jersey and Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Wilkinson earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of
Technology in 1996 where his research focused on integrating semiconductor LEDs and
VCSELs with silicon circuits and micro-machines (MEMS). He earned his B.E.E., also from Georgia Tech, in 1990.

Abstract: Technical discussion on the roles and responsibilities of an Early Career Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control-Orlando.   

Speaker Bio: Hemant is the section manager for the Systems Engineering Early Career Section at Missiles and Fire Control-Orlando. He currently manages over 130 early career systems engineers and over 27 summer interns during the summer. Hemant has been with the company for 32 years and has been a section manager for over six years. Prior to that, he has worked on over 15 different missiles and fire control programs. He holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University, and an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University.

Seminar Title: Nano/Micro-electro-mechanical systems (N/MEMS) for timing and sensing applications

Abstract: Professor Ansari is one of ECE's newest faculty members. This talk will focus on her research interests and in the many uses of MEMS, and the story of her path to an academic position. 

Speaker Bio: Azadeh Ansari received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran in 2010. She earned the M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2013 and 2016 respectively, focusing upon III-V semiconductor and MEMS devices and microsystems for RF applications. Prior to joining the ECE faculty at Georgia Tech, she was a postdoctoral scholar in the Physics Department at Caltech from 2016 to 2017.

Dr. Ansari is the recipient of a 2017 ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award from the University of Michigan for her research on “Gallium Nitride integrated microsystems for RF applications.” She received the University of Michigan Richard and Eleanor Towner Prize for outstanding Ph.D. research in 2016. She is a member of IEEE, IEEE Sensor’s young professional committee and serves as a technical program committee member of IEEE IFCS 2018.

The talk will start with a brief summary of Mary Lynn’s career. A brief summary of who ViaSat is will wrap up the talk.

Speaker Bio: Mary Lynn Smith is a Staff Antenna Engineer/Project Engineer/Program Manager for the Antenna Systems (AS) Division of ViaSat, Inc.  As a Staff Antenna Engineer, Mary Lynn is responsible for the electrical design of feeds, subreflectors, and antenna designs.  She is also responsible for managing the cost, quality elements, performance, schedule, and technical aspects of antenna systems as a Program Manager and Project Engineer.

In 1995, Mary Lynn joined ViaSat (formerly the Satellite Network Division of Scientific Atlanta) as an Antenna Engineer.  During this time Mary Lynn has designed tracking and non-tracking antennas covering the range from 200 MHz to 44 GHz, and frequency selective surface (FSS) subreflectors for dual and tri-band operation.  In addition to her design work, Mary Lynn has also been the project engineer and/or program manager on numerous projects.  These included a 3 C-band 6/9m antenna limited motion communication network, full autotracking L/S-band systems, a program tracking L/S-band system, a UHF transmit upgrade to an existing S/X-band full autotracking system, 4 C/X-band 9m antenna limited motion network, multiple 3m X-band antenna systems, Ka-band horn, polarizer, and diplexer for second generation consumer user terminal, Ka-band antenna system portion of an airborne user terminal, and Ku/Ka-band antenna system portion of an airborne user terminal.  In 2006, as Limited Motion Product Line Manager, Mary Lynn was responsible for maintaining, improving, and expanding the limited motion product line of antennas.  From 2007 to 2011, as VGate Champion for AS, Mary Lynn was responsible for helping to develop templates to support the VGate process which ViaSat uses to develop and manage programs.  She also helped in implementing and training others to use the process.  In 2009, as Acting Antenna and Microwave Engineering Manager, she was responsible for managing the Antenna and Microwave Engineers, making sure that programs were adequately staffed, supporting proposals, maintaining tools, and identifying needed training.  From 2009 to 2015, as the ViaSearch Site Lead for AS, where she define what searches were needed, involved in the development testing and early roll out of the ViaSearch tool created to search various systems and databases at ViaSat for information.  In 2012, Mary Lynn created and taught a training course on project engineering for ViaSat’s JAST division in Switzerland.

From 2015 to present, as the Product Brazing Lead, Mary Lynn address product priorities and issues with existing vacuum brazing suppliers as well as developed and instituted plan for identifying and qualifying new suppliers.  As the Antenna Engineering Community internal wiki site lead from 2009 to present, Mary Lynn has identified antenna capabilities and tools to the broader ViaSat internal audience.  This expanded in 2016 to be the internal wiki site lead for her business area as well.  She also has facilitated the Antenna Engineering Working group from 2009 to present and the Project Engineering Working Group from 2016 to present and coordinates both group’s internal wiki sites.  Mary Lynn managed the antenna test ranges and range personnel from 2016 to 2017.  She also mentors new engineers and project engineers whenever the opportunity arises.

Mary Lynn worked at Watkins-Johnson Company in San Jose, CA, as a Member of the Technical Staff in the Antenna Department, Electronic Equipment Division from 1988-1995.  She received a B.E.E. at the Georgia Institute of Technology on the Co-operative Education Plan in 1988 and her M.S.E.E. at Santa Clara University in 1994.  She has been a member of I.E.E.E. since 1983 and a Senior Member since 2007.  From 2011 to 2015t, Mary Lynn was the IEEE Region 3 Student Activities Committee (SAC) Vice Chair and from 2012 to 2015 the IEEE Region 3 Student Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC) Coordinator.

Title: Wigner Lattices and Born Melting

Abstract: This talk will describe new routes to melting of crystal lattices. The lattices are nearly defect-free, and are formed through repulsive interactions exclusively, thus forming Wigner lattices. The absence of defects inhibits melting, making the crystal much more stable. This reduces the energy difference between crystal and liquid, giving the melting transition a distinct second order character, even though it is strictly a first order transition. This form of melting was first proposed by Born nearly 80 years ago, but it is only now that its study can be carried out.

Speaker Bio: Professor Weitz received his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University and then joined Exxon Research and Engineering Company, where he worked for nearly 18 years. He then became a professor of physics at the University of Pennsylvania and moved to Harvard at the end of the last millennium as professor of physics and applied physics. Professor Weitz leads a group studying soft matter science with a focus on materials science, biophysics and microfluidics. He has co-founded several companies to commercialize some of the microfluidics work developed in his lab.

Paul will reveal some of the lessons that he has learned the hard way as well as by observing others with the desire that some of these will benefit students who are embarking on the next step of their career.

Speaker Bio:
Paul Emerson is currently the director of Linear Power Next and technologist for the Voltage Reference and Supervisor product line (VRS) which is part of the Analog Power Products division of Texas Instruments. From 2012 to 2017, Paul served as the general manager of Kilby Labs Dallas. Prior to managing the lab, Paul spent three years managing HVAL’s  (High Volume Analog and Logic) New Business Proving Grounds where he led a team focused on new business and technology development. Paul’s career at TI started in 1996 and he has served as analog design engineer, engineering manager, product line manager and business unit manager all for the Storage Products Group (SPG). Paul was elected to the TI Technical ladder in 1999 and promoted to Senior Member, Technical Staff in 2003. He is the inventor or co-inventor of 10 patents in HDD (Hard Disk Drive) read/write preamplifier circuit design and 1 patent in ink jet printing of sensors.

Prior to joining TI Paul worked as an analog design engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo, California. He earned his Bachelors of Electrical Engineering (BEE) in 1991 and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) in 1992 from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Outside of work, Paul is a busy parent of three who is actively involved in church, as a founding board member of a Camp in North Alabama, his sons’ scouting, an avid road cyclist, and various projects at home.

Speaker Bio:
Mr. John Troy Blalock is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1992 and has Professional Engineering License in SC. He serves as the President of the Columbia- Midlands Georgia Tech Alumni Network.

He has been an employee of SCANA Corporation for nearly 25 years serving in various engineering, construction management, compliance, and leadership roles within SCANA Corporation throughout his career to include currently the electric transmission organization and previously the natural gas transmission organization.  

His current responsibilities are that of a Project Manager for SCE&G System Control responsible for various applications used in System Control, as well as documentation of NERC compliance with standards, SERC reporting, and he is also responsible for assisting and supporting the System Controllers through development of procedures and training. Mr. Blalock is a certified NERC System Operator and achieved the classification of Reliability Coordinator. 

Mr. Blalock is the SERC representative and Chairman of the NERC Resource Subcommittee. The NERC Resource Subcommittee is leading efforts to improve primary frequency response in several of the Interconnections, support the integration of renewable resources into the Bulk Electric System and ensuring the reliability of Bulk Electric System by various measurements of performance. He also serves on the NERC Essential Reliability Services Working Group supporting and leading the Frequency Response Sub Group.

Abstract: In today’s growing complexity of seismic data, in both size and resolution, manual interpretation increasingly relies on computational seismic interpretation (CSI) for more efficient, accurate, and effective interpretation. This webinar will highlight our studies that have focused on leveraging perception and machine learning in creating a set of CSI algorithms and software tools.

Biosketch: Prof. AlRegib is currently a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the Director of the Multimedia and Sensors Lab (MSL) at Georgia Tech. In 2012, he was named the Director of Georgia Tech’s Center for Energy and Geo Processing (CeGP). He is a faculty member of the Center for Signal and Information Processing (CSIP). He also serves as the Director of Georgia Tech’s Initiatives and Programs in MENA. He has authored and co-authored more than 175 articles in international journals and conference proceedings. He has been issued five U.S. patents, two US patent applications, and several invention disclosures. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.

Seminar abstract:

VDEC is developing a micro-magnetic probe composed of a small coil and a low noise amplifier integrated on a chip. Main purpose of the probe is detection of a weak magnetic field generated by semiconductor devices with a high special resolution. Many types of electronic failures of semiconductor devices are associated with abnormalities of current flow in the devices, which generate different magnetic fields to be differentiated from normal operations. Identification of failure location is the first step of analyzing causes of failures. The magnetic probe is one of the best methods for this purpose. Today, recent results on two applications of the magnetic probe will be presented.

The first example is detection of gate leak current of power devices; IGBT. The location of the leakage has been successfully detected with a good agreement of a microscopic device analysis, which was done after physically removing gate electrodes.

The second example is an analysis of power network integrity of LSI. By comparing a normal chip with an intentionally fabricated abnormal one of missing via in power network, the magnetic probe has successfully detected subtle differences in magnetic fields, which has been again translated to an abnormal power current map analytically.

Both the above examples show that the micro-magnetic probe will be utilized for improving device reliability and fabrication technologies.

Speaker biosketch:

Kunihiro Asada received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1975, 1977, and 1980, respectively. In 1980 he joined the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. From 1985 to 1986 he stayed at Edinburgh University as a visiting scholar. From 1990 to 1992 he served as the Editor of IEICE Transactions on Electronics. In 1996 he established VDEC in University of Tokyo. He served as the Chair of IEEE/SSCS Japan Chapter in 2001-2002 and the Chair of IEEE Japan Chapter Operation Committee in 2007-2008. He is currently professor and director of VDEC. His research interest is design and analysis of integrated systems and devices. He is a member of IEEE, IEICE, and IEEJ.

The unique properties stem from their large surface area-to-volume ratio, very high aspect ratio, and carrier and photon confinement in two dimensions.

These nanowires are usually grown by the so-called vapor-liquid-solid mechanism, which relies on a metal nanoparticle to catalyze and seed the growth. An alternative technique to grow the nanowires is by selective area growth technique, where a dielectric mask is first patterned on the substrate prior to growth.

In this talk, Hoe Tan will present an overview of compound semiconductor nanowire research activities at The Australian National University. The optical and structural properties of binary and ternary III-V nanowires including GaAs, InGaAs, InP, and GaAsSb nanowires grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy will be presented. Various issues such as tapering of the nanowires, compositional non-uniformity along nanowires, crystal structure, carrier lifetime, and polarization effect will be discussed.

Tan will also present his group's results of III-V nanowires grown on Si substrates, which are of great interests for the integration of nano-optoelectronic devices on Si platforms. Their results of enhancing the quantum efficiency of nanowires by using plasmonics are promising to improve the performance of nanowire devices.

Finally, the results from nanowire lasers, photodetectors, solar cells, and photoelectrodes for water splitting will be presented.

About the Speaker:
Hoe Tan heads the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering at the Research School of Physics and Engineering, The Australian National University.

He received his B.E. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 1992, after which he worked with Osram in Malaysia as a quality assurance engineer. In 1997, he was awarded the PhD degree from The Australian National University for his dissertation on "Ion beam effects in GaAs-AlGaAs materials and devices." 

He has been the past recipient of the Australian Research Council Postdoctoral, QEII, and Future Fellowships. He has published/co-published over 350 journal papers, including four book chapters. He is also a co-inventor in four US patents related to laser diodes and infrared photodetectors.

His research interests include epitaxial growth of low-dimensional compound semiconductors, nanostructured optoelectronic devices and ion-implantation processing of compound semiconductors for optoelectronic device applications.

Dr. Green is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine and a fellow in the American College of Physicians and American College of Sports Medicine. He is the Medical Director for Major League Baseball (MLB), acts as the MLB Research Director and their Consultant on Anabolic Steroids. He is a Clinical Professor in the UCLA School of Medicine in the Division of Sports Medicine. Dr. Green also maintains a clinical practice at the Pacific Palisades Medical Group. He has been a team physician for intercollegiate athletics since 1986 and currently serves as a team physician for Pepperdine University. Dr. Green was a member of the NCAA’s Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sport and chaired the NCAA Committee on Drug Testing and Drug Education. He has specialized in athletes and drug abuse and previously conducted research through the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory.

Abstract: Frequency synthesis and modulation by the DS fractional-N PLL are essential in modern wireless transceivers. In addition to loop parameter variability, leakage current, and matching problems, the DS fractional-N PLL needs to deal with quantization noise and nonlinearity in consideration of phase noise, spur, and settling time. In this talk, various fractional-N PLL architectures (analog/digital/hybrid) and recent circuit techniques for mitigating quantization and nonlinearity will be presented. Also, PLLbased modulation methods (1-point/2-point/2+-point) will be discussed.

Speaker Bio: Woogeun Rhee received the B.S. degree in electronics engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1991, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1993, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 2001. From 1997 to 2001, he was with Conexant Systems, Newport Beach, CA, where he was a Principal Engineer and developed low-power, low-cost fractional-N synthesizers. From 2001 to 2006, he was with IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY and worked on clocking area for high-speed I/O serial links, including low-jitter phase-locked loops, clock-and-data recovery circuits, and on-chip testability circuits. In August 2006, he joined the faculty as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and became a Professor in December 2011. His current research interests include short-range low-power radios for next generation wireless systems and clock/frequency generation circuits for wireline and wireless communications. He holds 23 U.S. patents. Dr. Rhee is currently an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer of the Solid-State Circuits Society (2016-2017) and serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE JSSC. He has been an Associate Editor for IEEE TCAS-II (2008-2009) and a Guest Editor for IEEE JSSC Special Issue in November 2012 and November 2013. He has served as a member of several IEEE conferences, including ISSCC (2012-2016), CICC, and A-SSCC. He was the co-recipient of the “Silkroad Award” at the 2008 IEEE ISSCC, the “Best Student Paper Award” at the 2012 IEEE RFIT, and the “Best Paper Award” at the 2014 VLSI-DAT. Title: Paving the Way Towards 5G Wireless Communication Networks

Title: THz communication - Channel Models, Demonstrators and Standards

Abstract:
Already a couple of years ago THz communications have not only become an attractive new research area on channel modeling but also triggered a couple of projects heading to develop hardware demonstrators. In parallel discussions and activities in standardization and regulation took off. In March 2014, IEEE 802 established its project P802.15.3d with the task to develop the worldwide first wireless communications standard operating in the 300 GHz frequency band. The standardization process is accompanied by activities at the ITU-R level targeting on the provision of an appropriate regulatory framework at the World Radio Conference 2019 (WRC-2019) via a dedicated agenda item. The lecturer has been actively involved in all those areas. The talk will provide a brief overview on channel modeling at 300 GHz, present results achieved by a 300-Ghz HW demonstrator with electrical beam steering and will sketch the current status at IEEE 802 and the WRC 2019 preparations.

Thomas Kürner received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990, and his Dr.-Ing. degree in 1993, both from Univerity of Karlsruhe (Germany). From 1990 to 1994 he was with the Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik und Elektronik (IHE) at the University of Karlsruhe working on wave propagation modelling, radio channel characterisation and radio network planning. Since 2003 he is Full University Professor for Mobile Radio Systems at the Technische Universität Braunschweig. He has been engaged in several international bodies such as ITU-R SG 3, UMTS Forum, COST 231/273/259/2100/IC 1004 and NGMN. He participated in six large European projects amongst them the recently finished FP7-SEMAFOUR (‘Self-management for unified heterogeneous radio access networks’) project and the currently running H2020-iBroW (‘Innovative ultra-BROadband ubiquitous Wireless communications through terahertz transceivers’) project. He has actively contributed to the IEEE 802.11ad channel modeling document.Currently he is chairing the IEEE 802.15 IG THz and the IEEE 802.15.3d TG 100G. He was the project coordinator of the German TERAPAN project (“Terahertz communications for future personal area networks”). Kürner is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) and chairs the EurAAP WG Propagation. He has been co-organizer of all six editions of the International Workshop on Self-Organizing Networks (IWSON). Since 2008 he is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. In 2012 he was a guest lecturer at Dublin City University within the Telecommunications Graduate Initiative in Ireland.

In his current role as senior portfolio marketing manager for ECI Telecom, Scott operates as a bridge between the development and sales organizations, helping to evangelize ECI's industry-leading suite of optical transport and packet switching solutions.

Scott spent eight years as the Vice President for Product Management and System Engineering for Hitachi’s North American telecommunications division. Prior to Hitachi, Scott worked for both startup companies and large telecommunications equipment providers in Silicon Valley and the telecom corridors of New Jersey and Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Wilkinson earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996 where his research focused on integrating semiconductor LEDs and VCSELs with silicon circuits and micro-machines (MEMS). He earned his B.S.E.E., also from Georgia Tech, in 1990.

Title: Ionic Liquid/Block Polymer Nanocomposites: Remarkably Versatile, Functional Materials

Abstract:
Ionic liquids are an emerging class of solvents with an appealing set of physical attributes. These include negligible vapor pressure, impressive chemical and thermal stability, tunable solvation properties, high ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical windows. In particular, the non-volatility renders ionic liquids practical components of devices, but they require structure-directing agents to become functional materials. Block polymers provide a convenient platform for achieving desirable nanostructures by self-assembly, with lengthscales varying from a few nanometers up to several hundred nanometers. Furthermore, ionic liquids and polymer blocks can be selected to impart exquisitely tunable thermosensitivity, by exploiting either upper or lower critical solution transitions (UCSTs and LCSTs). In selected cases, it is also possible to prepare photoreversible and photopatternable systems. Overall, by combining designed block polymers and ionic liquids we have demonstrated materials with superior performance for a remarkably diverse set of applications. These include micelles for extraction, nanoreactors for catalysis, gate dielectrics in organic transistors, electrochromic and electroluminescent gels, and membranes for gas separation, ion batteries, and fuel cells.

Tim Lodge graduated from Harvard in 1975 with a B.A. cum laude in Applied Mathematics. He completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin in 1980, and then spent 20 months as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at NIST. Since 1982 he has been on the Chemistry faculty at Minnesota, and in 1995 he also became a Professor of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science. In 2013 he was named a Regents Professor, the University’s highest academic rank.

In 1994 he was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). He received the Arthur K. Doolittle Award from the PMSE Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 1998, and in 2004 he received the APS Polymer Physics Prize. He was elected to Fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and he received the International Scientist Award from the Society of Polymer Science, Japan, in 2009. He was the recipient of the ACS Prize in Polymer Chemistry, and was also elected a Fellow by the ACS, in 2010. In 2012 he received the Minnesota Award from the Minnesota Section of the ACS, and the Postbaccalaureate, Graduate and Professional Education Award from the University of Minnesota. He was honored with the Hermann Mark Award of the Division of Polymer Chemistry, ACS, in 2015, and in 2016 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Since 2001 he has been the Editor of the ACS journal Macromolecules. In 2011 he became the founding Editor for ACS Macro Letters. He has served as Chair of the Division of Polymer Physics, APS (1997–8), and as Chair of the Gordon Research Conferences on Colloidal, Macromolecular and Polyelectrolyte Solutions (1998) and Polymer Physics (2000). Since 2005 he has been Director of the NSF-supported Materials Research Science & Engineering Center at Minnesota. He has authored or co-authored over 380 papers in the field of polymer science, and advised or co-advised over 80 PhD students. His research interests center on the structure and dynamics of polymer liquids, including solutions, melts, blends, and block copolymers, with particular emphases on self-assembling systems using rheological, scattering and microscopy techniques.

Title: Innovative Photonic and Electronic Devices Based on Wide Band Gap Materials

Abstract:
The most recent and significant developments in optoelectronics and electronics are mostly related to advances in the crystal growth of semiconductor heterostructures. The outcomes of these breakthroughs have been successfully demonstrated and have yielded understanding of the subjects beyond quantum phenomena. Furthermore, they have given rise to tremendous industrial growth and replaced several conventional systems. Gallium nitride (GaN) related alloys have been recognized as among the most promising materials for optical and electronic devices in the short-wavelength region because of their wide and direct bandgaps, enabling strong optical direct transition.

Research and development of GaN has reached a stage where several devices (e.g. LEDs, diodes) have been commercialized. Several other devices are on the verge of commercialization. After the major breakthroughs and successful commercialization of GaN based LEDs, the development of other devices based on these materials has followed an accelerated course, prime examples of which being deep UV sources and detectors, high power electronic (converters, inverters, rectifiers...), sensors and harvesting energy.

The group of A. Ougazzaden at Georgia Tech Lorraine has made impressive progress in the epitaxy of both GaN and, more recently, BN based materials and nanostructures and their alloys. Analogous and complementary to graphene, the two dimensional atomic layers of h-BN are very interesting from the perspectives of both basic science and application. Furthermore, low dimensional BN systems are biocompatible, easily functionalized, and exhibit rich, reliable and superior physical properties in comparison with carbon nanotubes.

All of this could pave the way to develop new generation of photonic and electronic devices and more specifically deep UV sources and detectors, sensors, and, solar and betavoltaic cells. In this talk, I will be presenting the recent progress obtained by our group in the realization of innovative wide band gap material based devices.

Jim Stratigos, is founder and CEO of Cognosos Inc., and president of Broadband Strategies. He is an active angel investor, mentor and advisor to a variety of early-stage technology companies. He brings more than 35 years of experience as a successful technology entrepreneur and industry leader. At Broadband Strategies, Jim has advised private companies and venture capital firms in the telecom, wireless, semiconductor and energy industries.

Jim’s career includes CEO, executive management, marketing, and engineering positions in semiconductor, wireless and satellite technology companies, including Cognosos, Sytheros Communications, Jacket Micro Devices, Echostar, Media4 AT&T, Tridom, Scientific-Atlanta and Motorola. Speaker Bio: Ehsan Afshari was born in 1979. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 2003, and 2006, respectively. In August 2006, he joined the faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. In Fall 2016, he joined the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, as an Associate Professor. His research interests are mm-wave and terahertz electronics and low-noise integrated circuits for applications in communication systems, sensing, and biomedical devices.

Prof. Afshari serves as the Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society and a member of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Symposium (RFIC). He was the chair of the IEEE Ithaca section, the chair of Cornell Highly Integrated Physical Systems (CHIPS), a member of International Technical Committee of the IEEE Solid-State Circuit Conference (ISSCC), a member of the Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, a member of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (CICC), and a member of Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB).

He is selected as one of 50 most distinguished alumni of Sharif University. He was awarded National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2010, Cornell College of Engineering Michael Tien excellence in teaching award in 2010, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award in 2008, and Iran's Best Engineering Student award by the President of Iran in 2001. Abstract: There is an increasing interest in low cost THz systems for medical imaging, spectroscopy, and high data rate communication. Recent results in the lower THz frequencies (<1THz) suggests that standard CMOS/BiCMOS processes can compete with compound semiconductors for some applications. In this talk, we present a few “real” applications for the CMOS THz systems as well as a few “fake” ones. Next, we discuss major challenges in realizing these systems in CMOS. Moreover, we show several novel methods to overcome these challenges to generate mW-level powers with relatively low noise using oscillators, amplifiers, and frequency multipliers. Next, we show how similar approaches can result in >100 mW at terahertz frequencies using GaN HEMT devices. Finally, we show how we can realize more complicated systems such as 2-D phased arrays and coherent imaging systems in silicon.

Seminar Title: Non-Invasive Physiological Sensing and Modulation for Human Health and Performance

Abstract:
The Precision Medicine Initiative challenges biomedical researchers to reframe health optimization and disease treatment in a patient-specific, personalized manner. Rather than a one-size-fits-all paradigm, the charge is for a particular profile to be fit to each patient, and for disease treatment (or wellness) strategies to then be tailored accordingly. Non-invasive physiological sensing and modulation can play an important role in this effort by augmenting existing research in ‑omics and medical imaging towards better developing such personalized models for patients, and in continuously adjusting such models to optimize therapies in real-time to meet patients’ changing needs. While in many instances the focus of such efforts is on disease treatment, optimizing performance for healthy individuals is also a compelling need. This talk will focus on my group’s research on non-invasive sensing of the sounds and vibrations of the body, with application to musculoskeletal and cardiovascular monitoring applications. In the first half of the talk, I will discuss our studies that are elucidating mechanisms behind the sounds of the knees, and particularly the characteristics of such sounds that change with acute injuries. We use miniature microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) air-based and piezoelectric contact microphones to capture joint sounds emitted during movement, then apply data analytics techniques to both visualize and quantify differences between healthy and injured knees. In the second half of the talk, I will describe our work studying the vibrations of the body in response to the heartbeat using modified weighing scales and wearable MEMS accelerometers. Our group has extensively studied the timings of such vibrations in relation to the electrophysiology of the heart, and how such timings change for patients with cardiovascular diseases during treatment. Ultimately, we envision that these technologies can enable personalized titration of care and optimization of performance to reduce injuries and rehabilitation time for athletes and soldiers, improve the quality of life for patients with heart disease, and reduce overall healthcare costs.

Speaker Bio:
Omer Inan is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. He received his BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford in 2004, 2005, and 2009, respectively. From 2009-2013, he was the Chief Engineer at Countryman Associates, Inc., a professional audio manufacturer of miniature microphones and high-end audio products. His group is funded by NIH, DARPA, US Army, Texas Instruments, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Craig Neilsen Foundation, and the Wallace Coulter Foundation. While at Stanford as an undergraduate, he was the school record holder and a three-time NCAA All-American in the discus throw.

The Center for Energy and Geo Processing (CeGP) is a partnership between the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Department of Electrical Engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and minerals (KFUPM). The collaboration focuses on research in the areas of signal processing, seismic data processing, and applying modern signal processing to energy-related data. In addition, the Center focuses on education projects that lead to developing curriculum and new learning methodologies.

Our mission is to create innovative research practices and entrepreneurship-based education in the area of digital processing of geo signals and energy data.

Our vision is to use research and education to establish practices of successful collaboration across cultures with the goal of benefiting humanity.

Seminar Title: Can You Pay The Costs To Be The Boss? How Georgia Tech Influenced My Leadership Journey

Abstract:
Boss – a person who exercises control or authority over someone or something.  In today’s society, being the boss is a highly sought-after position because of certain “perceived” perks of the boss: power, prestige and money.  Often, in a quest for leadership, individuals fail to consider the important costs associated with being a boss, which may result in unanticipated obstacles along their journey.  It is important to identify and understand these costs and their significance in being a leader in an organization. This session is designed to share with the participants certain key ways that the presenter’s experiences while a student at Georgia Tech influenced her leadership journey.

Speaker Bio:
Karen V. Mills is the founding member of Mills Law, LLC, specializing in corporate/business contracts law and mediation.  Karen is also founder of KVM Enterprises, LLC, doing business as Miss Jenny’s Treats, a food products company which

was launched in June 2016.  She received an electrical engineering degree from Georgia Tech and a law degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She is active in the community: YWCA of Greater Atlanta (Chair of Governance Committee);

Seminar Title: IT Consulting: Three Case Studies of Governmental Challenges

Abstract:
The path from an academic career to one in the commercial or government sector isn’t always clear. The speaker will address the applicability of a Georgia Tech degree as Government IT Consultant. Particularly, the initial job search and recommendations for interviews. 

The speaker will than facilitate a technology focused review of three case studies from a 15-year career as a Booz Allen Hamilton consultant. The three case studies are:

•        Modeling Simulation Wargaming and Analysis
•        The Moral Imperative:  Countering Improvised Explosive Devices
•        Health IT: Or How I Learned to Change Careers Without Really Leaving

In closing, Mr. Gelbaum will review key features of the corporate culture at Booz Allen Hamilton.

Speaker Bio:
Since “getting out” of Georgia Tech as an INTA (2002), Mr. Gelbaum has worked in the Government IT Consulting industry. Since that time, he has supported numerous defense and intelligence organizations, in a wide variety technology reliant roles: Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Analyst, Conflict Campaign Planning and Analysis, All-Source Fusion Team Leadership, Data Identification and Integration Specialist, Analytics Team Lead, and Organizational Liaison. 

He informally instructed hundreds of service members and contractor, and presented to many senior leaders including the Director of the Joint Staff, Vice Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs, Commandants of the Marine Corps, and the JASON Group. 

Since switching careers Mr. Gelbaum has focused on project and program management in Health IT and Analytics. Mr. Gelbaum enjoys staying closely connected with the Georgia Tech community. He paved the way for numerous Booz Allen/GT hires from the INTA and CS degree programs, played years of GT Intramural Sports in DC’s Capital Alumni Network, and since returning to Atlanta three years ago, he hasn’t missed the Pi Mile, volunteers for the GT Crew Team, and takes his four year old daughter, Lily, to GT sporting events.

Title: Dense packing of spheres in cylinders

Abstract:
We study the optimal packing of hard spheres in an infinitely long cylinder [1-4]. Our simulations have yielded dozens of periodic, mechanically stable, structures as the ratio of the cylinder (D) to sphere (d) diameter is varied. Up to D/d=2.715 the densest structures are composed entirely of spheres which are in contact with the cylinder. The density reaches a maximum at discrete values of D/d when a maximum number of contacts are established. These maximal contact packings are of the classic "phyllotactic" type, familiar in biology. However, between these points we observe another type of packing, termed line-slip.

An analytic understanding of these rigid structures follows by recourse to a yet simpler problem: the packing of disks on a cylinder. We show that maximal contact packings correspond to the perfect wrapping of a honeycomb arrangement of disks around a cylindrical tube. While line-slip packings are inhomogeneous deformations of the honeycomb lattice modified to wrap around the cylinder (and have fewer contacts per sphere).

Beyond D/d=2.715 the structures are more complex, since they incorporate internal spheres, but an analysis in terms of contacts or constraints is still illuminating. We review some relevant experiments with hard spheres and small bubbles. We also discuss on-going and future areas of work related to this project.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Adil Mughal completed his undergraduate studies in theoretical physics at the University of Manchester, U.K. in 2002. Continuing his studies at the University of Manchester, Dr. Mughal pursued a PhD under the supervision of Professor Mike Moore.

Since 2010, Dr. Mughal has held the position of Lecturer in Mathematical Modeling at Aberystwyth University, U.K. as well as postdoctoral positions in Germany and Italy. His current research is focused on packing problem and the tole of topology & geometry in soft condensed matter physics.

This presentation will provide an overview of Eastman Chemical Company. It will cover who we are, the everyday products that we are involved with, where we are located, and what an electrical engineer can expect in a chemical company.

Speaker Bio:
I’m a 2004 Graduate of the University of Tennessee with a BS in Electrical Engineering. After graduating, I worked for two EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) firms in Knoxville, TN (CH2M Hill and Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon) prior to starting with Eastman in 2015 as a Senior Electrical Engineer. I’m a registered Professional Engineer and I currently hold licenses in eight states: AL, GA, KY, MA, NC, TN, VA, and WV.

Abstract:  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1 in 68 children in the United States have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  ASD is associated with enormous individual, familial, and social cost across the lifespan. There is an urgent need for efficacious treatments that can be delivered across resource-strained environments.  In this context, robotic technologies may yield intervention platforms with substantial promise for impacting early core symptoms of ASD. This seminar will provide a brief background of robotics research in ASD intervention and then introduce the research on the design and preliminary testing of robotic intervention platforms and environments for young children with ASD at Vanderbilt University. 

Biography:  Nilanjan Sarkar is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering (primary) and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (secondary) at Vanderbilt University. He received his Ph.D. from the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. He directs the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lab and co-directs the Autos Lab at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Sarkar’s research interests are in dynamics, controls, robotics and human-robot and human-machine interactions. He is a Fellow of the ASME.

Speaker Bio:
Mr. Joseph P. Irwin is the President of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association. He joined the Alumni Association in 1999. Irwin began his career with Russell Corporation as a Los Angeles sales representative in 1980 and worked his way up to JERZEES Division president in 1994 – a division with $500 million in sales and 10% net operating profits, a $25 million budget and a staff of 135.

Irwin performed graduate work in a master’s program at the University of North Texas, a graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership, and he has continued his education through a variety of professional-development programs.

Joe Irwin and his brother, Mike, wrote a book, “Cathedrals of College Football”, which highlights 25 football dynasties, including Georgia Tech.

Irwin has been active with the Boy Scouts of America, United Way, variety International charity, and the Bobby Dodd Institute. He’s on the Board of the Council of Alumni Association Executives (CAAE) and the Georgia Tech Facilities Board.
