{"63181":{"#nid":"63181","#data":{"type":"news","title":"The Tower Undergraduate Research Journal Releases Second Print Edition","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAt an informal Pecha Kucha (pee-CHAY coo-CHA) event with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program on November 18, The Tower celebrated the\nrelease of its second volume amidst casual conversation about Institute\nresearch.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe undergraduate research journal that was conceived in\n2007 and printed its first edition in 2009 has grown in size and breadth of\ncontent in its second issue. This edition includes both perspectives and\narticles on undergraduate research from the Schools of Computer Science; Physics;\nElectrical and Computer Engineering; Biomedical Engineering; Economics;\nMechanical Engineering; and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Tower\u2019s competitive submission process resulted in just\nunder half of this issue\u2019s submissions reaching publication. One graduate and\none undergraduate member of the journal\u2019s 20-person review staff critiques each\nentry.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFor undergraduates, submitting articles to The Tower is a\nunique opportunity to partake in a peer review process and receive feedback not\nonly on their research methodology, but also on their abilities to discuss,\ncommunicate and present their research narratives to a wide audience.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cReviewers don\u2019t just consider the technical aspects of the\nresearch, but also the story it presents,\u201d said Michael Chen, junior chemistry\nmajor and 2010-11 Tower editor-in-chief. All authors receive feedback from\nreviewers, regardless of whether they are published, and are encouraged to re-submit\nafter making recommended improvements.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EComputer science graduate student Alex Marquez,\nwhose perspective appears in this edition of The Tower, submitted his paper at\nthe encouragement of friends and to see how well his entry would be understood\nby a wider audience \u2014 one that does not necessarily have a computer science\nbackground. Marquez had submitted an earlier, higher-level version of his paper\nto a computer science-related conference, but this was his first experience\nsubmitting something for peer review to a general audience.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI think it has to be more accessible, perhaps even multidisciplinary,\nfor this type of journal,\u201d Marquez said, as opposed to submitting an article\nfor review within one\u2019s field of study. Though no longer eligible to submit to\nThe Tower since moving on to graduate studies, Marquez said he would submit to\nother journals in the future and would enjoy being part of a review board for\nthe process.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETo Chen, the lifeline of the journal is submissions. His\ngoal as the journal\u2019s editor-in-chief has been to encourage submissions from\nall areas of campus, continually challenging the diversity and quality of\nfeatured work. Recruiting articles from the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and\nthe College of Management became specific priorities.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cYou can\u2019t say the journal represents Georgia Tech if it\ndoesn\u2019t include all the facets of Georgia Tech,\u201d Chen said. \u201cSomeone is doing\nresearch in every department.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EChen hopes to host more Pecha Kucha events in the future to promote\nmore frequent casual, jargon-stripped conversations about research at the\nInstitute. Additionally, he plans to feature more varied content in the next\nprint edition, such as interviews with professors, to \u201cmake the journal as\nuseful as possible\u201d and expand its audience.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents can learn more about how to submit articles to The\nTower or join its staff at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gttower.org\u0022\u003Egttower.org\u003C\/a\u003E.
