Our products can be found in everything from beer cans, to pickup trucks, and electronic devices. Each of these products requires unique specifications ranging from mechanical properties to surface quality. A major challenge is developing production friendly surface treatment processes that can be applied uniformly, consistently, and over large areas, at high speed. Here we will review manufacturing processes and some of the challenges associated with the manufacturing of flat rolled aluminum products.

Bio: Thomas Beck (TJ) is a Sr. Scientist in the surface science group at the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, GA. While at Novelis TJ has led multiple exploratory projects investigating novel surface treatment processes as well as serving as a subject matter expert in the areas of failure analysis and material characterization. TJ has played a key role in creating the forensic analysis lab at the NGRTC, enabling cross functional root cause analysis of many challenging issues. In addition to these roles he has had the opportunity to work with teams exploring technologies which have the potential for creating new business opportunities for Novelis. Prior to joining Novelis, TJ worked at the Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology where he worked on developing various nano and microfabrication processes for both internal and external customers.

Keep an eye out for next semester's Lunch and Learn schedule!

Beer Cans to Pickup Trucks, the Science and Technology Behind Flat Rolled Aluminum Products

Monday, April 13, 12 - 1 PM:
Thomas Beck,
Senior Scientist – Novelis, Global Research and Technology Center

Link to virtual meeting: https://bluejeans.com/119905480

limited_html
Thomas Beck - Beer Cans to Pickup Trucks, the Science and Technology Behind Flat Rolled Aluminum Products (Virtual Session)
mailto:billyde.brown@gatech.edu">Billyde Brown, Research Faculty Director of Manufacturing Education Programs
