{"63209":{"#nid":"63209","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Celebrates Fall Commencement","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia\nInstitute of Technology celebrates its 238th commencement with approximately\n2,000 undergraduate and graduate students participating in two ceremonies.\u0026nbsp; Graduates will be receiving bachelor\u2019s,\nmaster\u2019s, and doctoral degrees through Georgia Tech\u2019s six colleges, thirty\nschools and the Georgia Tech\u0026shy;Savannah program.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAmbassador Andrew Young, Chairman, GoodWorks International LLC,\nwill address the master\u2019s and PhD candidates at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on\nFriday, December 17, at 7 p.m., while John Baumstark, founding chairman and\nCEO, Suniva Inc., will address the undergraduate candidates at Alexander\nMemorial Coliseum on Saturday, December 18, at 9 a.m. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFormer ambassador to the United Nations,\nformer U.S. congressman from Georgia and former mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young\nhas an extensive history of engaging in humanitarian efforts that have spanned\nthe globe.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom his early days as an ordained minister\nand key aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement to\nhis current position as founding principal and chair of GoodWorks\nInternational, an organization that embraces his long-held mission of\nfacilitating economic development in the Caribbean and Africa, Young has\ndedicated himself to improving the lives of all people, particularly those in\nAfrica and the Diaspora.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EYoung\u2019s \u201cgood works\u201d have taken him to more\nthan 150 countries, including 48 of 53 countries in Africa. Through his\nleadership, nations throughout the world have created a successful model that\ncombines religion, education, democracy and free enterprise in ways that\nsupport the public good. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter being elected to the U.S. House of\nRepresentatives three consecutive times, Young was appointed by President Jimmy\nCarter as the country\u2019s first African American ambassador to the United\nNations. In 1996, he was awarded the Olympic Order, the highest award of the\nOlympic Movement, for his work as international vice president for Law\nEngineering and chair of the Centennial Olympic Games hosted in Atlanta.\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile serving two terms as mayor of Atlanta,\nYoung helped attract 1,100 new businesses and $70 billion in private\ninvestments, and helped create 1 million new jobs. His leadership was vital to the\ncity\u2019s achieving the international reputation it enjoys today. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EYoung serves or has\nserved on numerous corporate boards of directors and advisory boards, including\nthe Southern African Enterprise Development Fund, the Leon H. Sullivan\nFoundation, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change,\nDiversapack, Barrick Gold, United Nations, AMC and the Atlanta Falcons. He has\nalso received honorary degrees from more than sixty institutions, including\nHoward University (his alma mater), Swarthmore College, Duke University, Emory\nUniversity, Clark Atlanta University, the University of Georgia, and Morehouse\nCollege, which named its Center for International Affairs in his honor. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition he has\nreceived honorary degrees from international educational institutions including\nthe University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the University of Maiduguri\n(Nigeria). Georgia State University\u2019s School of Policy Studies, which carries\nhis name, is one of the highest ranked policy schools in the United States.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAs CEO of Suniva, John\nBaumstark leads a highly efficient manufacturer of affordable solar cells and\nmodules. Suniva, headquartered in Norcross, Georgia, evolved in 2007 from\nBaumstark\u2019s collaboration with Ajeet Rohatgi, Regents\u2019 Professor and founding\ndirector of Georgia Tech\u2019s University Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics\n(UCEP). \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 2008 Suniva began\nproduction of its first-generation solar cells, achieving the fastest\nproduction ramp-up in solar manufacturing. In just three years, Suniva\ndramatically expanded its production capacity, set world records for solar cell\nefficiencies and was named Renewable Energy Exporter of the Year by the\nExport-Import (EX-IM) Bank of the United States. (In 2009 Suniva exported more\nthan 90 percent of its production.) Last spring, Baumstark accepted the EX-IM\nBank\u2019s award in Washington, D.C., where he also introduced President Barack\nObama before a major policy speech on U.S. exports. Also this year, The Wall\nStreet Journal ranked Suniva #2 on its list of the \u201cTop 10 Venture-Backed,\nClean Technology Companies.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBaumstark has more than twenty\nyears\u2019 experience in early- and late-stage private and public companies. Prior\nto founding Suniva, he was an operating partner at H.I.G.
