{"632774":{"#nid":"632774","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Celebrating Black History Month: The Importance of Representation with Crystal Bell","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThroughout her life, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/bell\/crystal\u0022\u003ECrystal Bell\u003C\/a\u003E has been encouraged and motivated by the mentorship of those around her.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;They have inspired me to never stop striving for greatness,\u0026rdquo; says Bell.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis inspiration has led her to Georgia Tech, where she is a Ph.D. candidate in the\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E School of Biochemistry and Chemistry.\u003C\/a\u003E With her advisor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.mse.gatech.edu\/people\/faisal-alamgir\u0022\u003EDr. Faisal Alamgir\u003C\/a\u003E, she experiments with materials to help design better fuel cells for the next generation of clean energy devices. Outside of the lab, she is president of the Georgia Tech chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;NOBCChE feels like a family \u0026mdash; it is a community allowing me to see people who look like me in places where African Americans are not represented in large numbers,\u0026rdquo; says Bell.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThrough the organization, Bell connects African American youth with STEM experiences. And through a middle school outreach event called \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.futuretech.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;Hands on Future Tech,\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/a\u003E Bell helps facilitate engaging experiments and scientific learning. It\u0026rsquo;s all with an aim to continue contributing to a community that once mentored her.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Engaging students in STEM at younger ages promotes long-term curiosity that can lead them to pursuing degrees in STEM down the road,\u0026rdquo; says Bell.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBell is particularly aware of how monumental a small bit of inspiration can be, given that that mentorship and guidance from others was critical to Bell\u0026rsquo;s decision to become a scientist.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen it comes to Black History Month, Bell is grateful for an opportunity to highlight the academic, cultural, and historical achievements of African American figures.
