{"634992":{"#nid":"634992","#data":{"type":"news","title":"The Student Center Celebrates 50 Years","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAlthough the Student Center was empty of people on the day its 50th anniversary was marked, the community still gathered \u0026mdash; albeit virtually \u0026mdash; to say goodbye to the cherished community space.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen campus operations shifted drastically in March in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the team\u0026#39;s plans for a large event to honor the building\u0026#39;s 50th anniversary and kick off its demolition and renovation quickly adapted.\u0026nbsp;On Monday, April 27th, the Student Center\u0026#39;s website and social channels hosted The Wrecking Ball, a series of digital experiences and activities to celebrate the building\u0026#39;s impact on the Georgia Tech community.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe day began with a\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/georgiatech\/videos\/1602312353265278\/UzpfSTEwNzUxODYwNTk1NTMxODozOTExODAzMDk1NTI2ODMx\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E live event \u003C\/a\u003Ethat offered a final tour of the building hosted by the student chair of the Student Center Expansion Committee, Hisham Temmar. During the live tour, students and alumni shared hundreds of their own memories as each corner of the building was visited one last time. The live tour and other items like an interactive historical map allowed the community to look back through time at the various faces and functions of the Student Center\u0026#39;s spaces over the years. The memories submitted by community members about the role the Student Center played in their lives were included in several of the historical review elements found on the web page. The live events of the day concluded with a special \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/georgiatech\/videos\/659381611286858\/UzpfSTEwNzUxODYwNTk1NTMxODozOTEyNTAyNTk1NDU2ODgx\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eonline tribute to Midnight Breakfast\u003C\/a\u003E, a long-standing and finals week tradition that was originally planned for this semester on Monday, the 27th.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026quot;We are glad we were able to honor the Student Center legacy and still have Midnight Breakfast virtually. It was exciting to have so many members of the campus community participate throughout the day.\u0026quot;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E-Dr. Lindsay Bryant\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u0026nbsp;Senior Director, Georgia Tech Student Center\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile the day\u0026#39;s events focused on the first 50 years of the Student Center\u0026#39;s community impact, attention was also paid to the exciting future of the building as part of the Campus Center project.
