{"63564":{"#nid":"63564","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Professors Receive 2011 Cancer Research Awards","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETwo Georgia Institute of\nTechnology faculty members have received 2011 Cancer Research Awards.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAli Adibi, professor of optics\nand photonics in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Elizabeth Mynatt, professor and associate dean of the College\nof Computing, have been selected by the Georgia Cancer Coalition to be among\nthe 12 award recipients.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThanks to citizens\u2019\nvoluntary donations to the Georgia Cancer Research Fund on state income tax\nforms, Adibi will receive $50,000 seed funding for the study of label-free\nprostate cancer biomarkers with applications for the detection and treatment of\nprostate cancer.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMynatt\u2019s grant will support\na collaborative effort among Georgia Tech, Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta,\nthe Georgia Department of Community Health, Morehouse School of Medicine and\nIBM to develop a distributed model of the pediatrics system in Georgia. The\ngoal is to better understand how care processes, information and resources flow\nthrough the system.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech is also\ncollaborating on two additional Cancer Research Awards.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Christopher R. Flowers,\nan assistant professor of hematology\/medical oncology at Emory University and\nan adjunct assistant professor in Georgia Tech\u2019s School of Industrial and\nSystems Engineering, will use the funds to enhance the Metropolitan Atlanta\ncancer registry.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe other collaborative\naward went to Shafiq Khan, professor of biological sciences at Clark Atlanta\nUniversity, where the Collaborative Center for Cancer Genomics operates in\ncooperation with Georgia Tech and St. Joseph\u2019s Hospital of Atlanta.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Cancer Coalition\nreceived more than 70 proposals from researchers across the state. Each award\nis matched by the awardee\u2019s organizations. Cancer Research Awards often provide\nseed money for pilot studies that have the potential of attracting larger, more\nprestigious national grant awards.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0022These research awards are\nan important investment in our state\u2019s scientists,\u0022 said Bill Todd, president and\nchief executive officer of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. \u201cWith matching funds\nand potential for additional national funding, we are making a major\ncontribution to cancer research in the state.
