He will be missed, and we wish him all the best in the years ahead at UT-Austin.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EMeet Michael Schatz\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;In these uncertain times, we face a number of challenges ahead,\u0026rdquo; Schatz says. \u0026ldquo;However, I am confident that together with my colleagues in the School of Physics, the College of Sciences and elsewhere in the Institute, we will find ways to navigate successfully a path forward.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESchatz started at Georgia Tech in the fall of 1996, and is the associate chair for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/intro-courses\u0022\u003EIntroductory Physics Program\u003C\/a\u003E within the School of Physics. He leads the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.schatzlab.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EPattern Formation and Control Lab\u003C\/a\u003E, where he and his team research experimental nonlinear dynamics (pattern formation, chaos and turbulence in fluid flows) and physics education. He was a 1999 recipient of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/rescorp.org\/cottrell-scholars\u0022\u003ECottrell Scholars Award\u003C\/a\u003E for his commitment to excellence in both research and teaching, and is the winner of the 2020 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ctl.gatech.edu\/faculty\/awards\/online-teaching\u0022\u003ETeaching Excellence Award for Online Education\u003C\/a\u003E from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ctl.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Teaching and Learning\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESchatz is also a former director and associate director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.handsonresearch.org\/\u0022\u003EHands-on Research in Complex Systems Schools\u003C\/a\u003E, held annually at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ictp.it\/\u0022\u003EInternational Centre for Theoretical Physics\u003C\/a\u003E in Trieste, Italy.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EProfessor Michael Schatz will serve as interim chair for the School of Physics beginning July 1, 2020.
