The principal investigator is associate professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/user\/dragomir-davidovic\u0022\u003EDragomir Davidovic\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECaitlin Petro, a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Biological Sciences, received a seed grant for \u0026ldquo;Development of Cutting-Edge Approaches for Characterization of Root Microbiomes in Peatlands\u0026rdquo;. The principal investigator is professor and associate chair of research\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/joel-kostka\u0022\u003EJoel Kostka\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EImmediate support, long-term research\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEight other graduate and postdoctoral students from the Schools of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EMechanical Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chbe.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EChemical and Biomolecular Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ELiterature, Media and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;were also the first to receive funds in the inaugural seed program.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Without the opportunity of collaboration and financial support that the Georgia Tech-ORNL seed grant provides, the doors of additional funding and research goals would be more difficult to open in the future. I consider this opportunity to be the tip of the iceberg, providing immediate support for long-term research outcomes and goals,\u0026rdquo; says Daniel Phelps, a seed grant recipient from the School of Literature, Media, and Communications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EQuantum mechanics, magnetic particles\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDark plans to use the funds to test sample fabrication from Dragovic\u0026rsquo;s lab in the newly installed Quantum Isolation and Observation System, with ORNL collaborator and staff scientist \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/staff-profile\/thomas-ward\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EThomas Zac Ward\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDark says the funding opportunity will allow him to probe the limits of quantum mechanics in a magnetic particle. \u0026ldquo;These results will help to confirm whether electron tunneling can be used to measure quantum correlations in a large spin-system, and whether rare earth metal doping can successfully adjust the environmental coupling of this system,\u0026rdquo; Dark says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EAbout our Oak Ridge National Laboratory strategic partnership\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs one of the\u0026nbsp;Oak Ridge, Tennessee lab\u0026#39;s eight core university partners, Georgia Tech is in a unique position to partner with ORNL experts on collaborative research.
