{"638502":{"#nid":"638502","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Postdoc\u2019s Plans for Ammonia-Based Energy Tech Wins GRA Grant","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA postdoctoral fellow in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;has won a $50,000\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gra.org\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Research Alliance\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(GRA) grant for his proposal to commercialize ammonia electrosynthesis, a promising clean energy technology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/nazemi.chemistry.gatech.edu\/about\/\u0022\u003EMohammadreza Nazemi\u003C\/a\u003E, who researches in Regents\u0026#39; Professor and Julius Brown Chair\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/faculty\/El-Sayed\/\u0022\u003EMostafa El-Sayed\u0026rsquo;s\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ldl.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ELaser Dynamics Lab\u003C\/a\u003E, developed this particular technology during his Ph.D. studies. He has already received a patent for the process, which utilizes the nitrogen and hydrogen in ammonia for new uses, including as a fuel source that burns cleaner than fossil fuels. Nitrogen can also serve as a fertilizer \u0026mdash; another potential revenue source \u0026mdash; and as a transport mechanism for liquid fuels. Hydrogen by itself is very difficult to transport, but ammonia, which requires much lower pressurization than liquid natural gas to remain in liquid form, could be used as a carrier for hydrogen.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EElectrosynthesis is the combination of chemical compounds in an electrochemical cell. The process has the potential to be less wasteful of materials than conventional or traditional\u003Cem\u003Eredox\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;reaction, a different type of chemical reaction. Electrosynthesis also allows for customization, or fine-tuning, of certain chemical functions.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENazemi says existing fuel pipelines that transport natural gas may get a new life as transport pipes for those liquid components, thereby saving money. \u0026ldquo;We already have the infrastructure. We\u0026rsquo;re trying to eliminate the factors that are not green or sustainable. We\u0026rsquo;re taking steps to make sure we\u0026rsquo;re mitigating carbon emissions, and also providing energy at lower costs to customers around the world,\u0026rdquo; he says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn its letter to Nazemi informing him of the award, the GRA says its goals for the grant include moving university technologies out of the university labs and into the marketplace, and growing university-based startup companies in Georgia \u0026ldquo;to create a vibrant industrial base and high-quality jobs.
