So he or she also removes tissue surrounding the visible tumor. Later, the lab report will tell whether that surgical margin harbors tumor cells and, most important, how close the cells come to the edge of the cut. That distance can determine what happens next. If cancer cells appear all the way to the edge of the resected tissue, there is no clean margin, and the patient may have to undergo more surgery.\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":"","field_summary_sentence":"","uid":"27349","created_gmt":"2011-02-03 10:04:18","changed_gmt":"2016-10-08 02:24:18","author":"Floyd Wood","boilerplate_text":"","field_publication":"","publication":"relief fund","field_article_url":"","publication_url":"http:\/\/jnci.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/103\/3\/173.short?rss=1","dateline":{"date":"2011-02-02T00:00:00-05:00","iso_date":"2011-02-02T00:00:00-05:00","tz":"America\/New_York"},"extras":[],"groups":[{"id":"1292","name":"Parker H.
