It is comprised of three separate events: IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST), IEEE Information Visualization (InfoVis), and IEEE Scientific Visualization (SciVis). Like other conferences throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, VIS was held virtually.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s research was highlighted by one Best Paper Honorable Mention titled \u003Cem\u003EMapping Researchers with PeopleMap\u003C\/em\u003E. The paper \u0026ndash; authored by \u003Cstrong\u003EJon Saad-Falcon\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EOmar Shaikh\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EZijie J. Wang\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EAustin P. Wright\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003ESasha Richardson\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/strong\u003E \u0026ndash; presents an open-source interactive tool that uses natural language processing to create visual maps for researchers based on their research interests and publications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Discovering research expertise at universities can be a difficult task,\u0026rdquo; the paper contends. \u0026ldquo;Directories routinely become outdated, and few help in visually summarizing researchers\u0026rsquo; work or supporting the exploration of shared interests among researchers. This results in lost opportunities for both internal and external entities to discover new connections, nurture research collaboration, and explore the diversity of research.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe paper also received a VAST Poster Research Award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlso of note, new School of Computational Science \u0026amp; Engineering Chair \u003Cstrong\u003EHaesun Park\u003C\/strong\u003E received recognition for a 2010 IEEE VAST Paper. The paper received a Test of Time Award, recognizing it for continued contributions to the visual analytics and visualization community. The paper is titled \u003Cem\u003EiVisClassifier: An Interactive Visual Analytics System for Classification Based on Supervised Dimension Reduction\u003C\/em\u003E and co-authored by \u003Cstrong\u003EJaegul Choo\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EHanseung Lee\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EJaeyeon Kihm\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003EEmily Wall\u003C\/strong\u003E, who is advised by Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EAlex Endert\u003C\/strong\u003E, was also recognized with the VGTC Outstanding Dissertation Honorable Mention for her work \u003Cem\u003EDetecting and Mitigating Human Bias in Visual Analytics\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;People are susceptible to a multitude of biases, including perceptual biases and illusions; cognitive biases like confirmation bias or anchoring bias; and social biases like racial or gender bias that are borne of cultural experiences and stereotypes,\u0026rdquo; Wall contends. \u0026ldquo;As humans are an integral part of data analysis and decision making in many domains, their biases can be injected into and even amplified by models and algorithms.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHer work aims to develop a better understanding of the role human bias plays in visual data analysis by defining bias, detecting bias, and mitigating bias.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EExplore more about Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s contributions to IEEE VIS at the links below, or visit the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/vis.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Visualization Lab\u003C\/a\u003E.
