{"642125":{"#nid":"642125","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Former Modern Languages\u2019 Student, Joseph Huntemann, Highlights the Importance of Foreign Language and Cross-Cultural Communication ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInternational Affairs\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/a\u003Ealumnus\u0026nbsp;and former \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EModern Languages\u003C\/a\u003E student, Joseph\u0026nbsp;Huntemann, serves as\u0026nbsp;senior project manager for the Aerospace, Defense, and Advance Manufacturing (ADAM) team at the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.georgia.org\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Department of Economic Development.\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;Initially recruited to start on international and investment projects, Joseph was brought in as a Japan specialist, following his previous role working at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.atlanta.us.emb-japan.go.jp\/itprtop_en\/index.html\u0022\u003EJapanese Consulate of Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;After holding his senior project manager position for eight years,\u0026nbsp;Huntemann\u0026nbsp;has been promoted to managing director of the Tokyo office of the Georgia Department of Economic Development starting in January\u0026nbsp;2021.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELanguage as a Cornerstone\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBeing a\u0026nbsp;point person for the Japanese business community,\u0026nbsp;Huntemann\u0026nbsp;relies on his strong\u0026nbsp;foreign\u0026nbsp;language and cross-cultural\u0026nbsp;communication\u0026nbsp;skills.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I can\u0026rsquo;t speak for anyone else, but foreign language skills and cross-cultural expertise have been the cornerstone of my career. Working in economic development, almost exclusively with international businesses where there may be language barriers, it\u0026rsquo;s essential to be able to communicate effectively so important messages don\u0026rsquo;t get lost in translation,\u0026rdquo; said\u0026nbsp;Huntemann.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EA Georgia Tech Native\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHuntemann\u0026nbsp;was an \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInternational Affairs\u003C\/a\u003E undergraduate from 2001-2005.\u0026nbsp;Following graduation, he went straight in to graduate school\u0026nbsp;in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESam Nunn\u0026nbsp;School of International Affairs\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;He\u0026nbsp;initially enrolled in French courses, but\u0026nbsp;soon\u0026nbsp;became interested in Japanese culture in college\u0026nbsp;because of his friendship with a fellow Tech student in the\u0026nbsp;freshman\u0026nbsp;dormitory.\u0026nbsp;As a sophomore,\u0026nbsp;Huntemann\u0026nbsp;enrolled in Japanese courses at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Modern Languages\u003C\/a\u003E and remained an active\u0026nbsp;Japanese student until he completed his graduate program.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile in graduate\u0026nbsp;school,\u0026nbsp;Huntemann\u0026nbsp;completed a 6-month internship in Tokyo, administered through the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Modern Languages\u003C\/a\u003E, sponsored by JETRO (Japan External Trade\u0026nbsp;Organization).\u0026nbsp;Huntemann\u0026nbsp;also\u0026nbsp;completed a research assistantship at GTRI\u0026nbsp;and an internship at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for International Strategy, Technology and Policy within the Nunn School.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAdvice to Modern Languages\u0026rsquo;\u0026nbsp;Students\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHuntemann\u0026nbsp;advises students to study a foreign language for the right reasons.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Don\u0026rsquo;t pick up a language just because you think it\u0026rsquo;s going to lead to a career path. If you want to learn a foreign language, do it because you have a passion and interest for the language and the culture. Language is not an end, but a means to an end. You\u0026rsquo;ll be more successful at language learning if you have a goal tied to it.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHuntemann\u0026nbsp;has strong ties with the Japanese community in Atlanta serving as an active board member of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jasgeorgia.org\/\u0022\u003EJapan-America Society of Georgia\u003C\/a\u003E and a member of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jccg.org\/\u0022\u003EJapanese Chamber of Commerce of Georgia\u003C\/a\u003E.
