Sloan Foundation announced on Feb. 15.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/features\/quantum-resistance\u0022\u003EPeikert\u2019s research\u003C\/a\u003E\nfocuses on geometric \u201clattices\u201d as a new mathematical foundation for cryptography\n(the science of developing secret codes and the use of those codes in an\nencryption system). In principle, quantum computers could break much of the cryptography in wide use today, so there is a strong need for alternative schemes.\nThe lattice approach yields very simple schemes that are highly efficient and\nparallelizable.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMy research has shown that lattice-based cryptography\noffers surprisingly rich degrees of functionality and security,\u201d Peikert said.\n\u201cI\u0027m thrilled to be recognized by the Sloan Foundation. This fellowship will\nsupport my research group here at Georgia Tech, as well as collaborations with\ncolleagues around the world.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.sloan.org\/fellowships\/page\/21\u0022\u003ESloan\nResearch Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E is a highly competitive award, involving nominations of\nprestigious scholars from all over the United States and Canada. Past\nrecipients of the Sloan Research Fellowship have gone on to win 38 Nobel\nPrizes.
